Concord, NC(November 9, 2009) -- In a week where Jeff Fultz suffered the death of his twenty-one year old son John in a traffic accident he scored an emotional win at Concord Speedway's North South Shoutout's CRA 125.
Jeff Choquette got the lead early from polesitter Cassius Clark, but the yellow flew early on lap two as Lanny Graham crashed. Two laps after the restart Clark took the lead, but Fultz was on the charge, taking second by lap seven. Choquette settled into third, pressured by Max Gresham, in his first Super Late Model start, and Ryan Blaney.
Clark survived another yellow on lap seventeen and kept the lead through lap forty-six when the yellow flew again for a spin by Dave LaTour, Jr. The leaders pitted, with Blaney out first, followed by Fultz, Johnny VanDoorn, and Clark. Bobby Measmer, Jr. and Cooper Faasen stayed on track and assumed the lead at the restart.
Three laps later Terry Horak, Preston Peltier and John Long got together in turn one, bringing out another caution. Measmer pitted, giving the lead to Faasen, but the restart went south when John Hickens, Mason Migus, Jones and Dylan Presnell wadded it up on the frontstretch.
Faasen kept the lead at the second attempt at a restart, but Fultz went to second, and by lap fifty three he was in first. By lap sixty-one Clark worked his way to second, moving Faasen to third.
LaTour spun again on lap eighty, and Faasen finally pitted, along with Blaney, moving VanDoorn to third.
The race remained green until the end, with Fultz dominating the rest of the laps. Peltier worked his way back to fourth, Chase Elliott, in his Concord debut, followed him to fifth, and with four to go VanDoorn got by Clark for second.
Clark's car was smoking off the right rear for much of the race, something he acknowledged after the race. "Jeff and I had real good cars all night. My rear end just started seizing up and I started losing power. Oil pressure was fine, but the car wasn't as zippy as it was all weekend, just didn't have enough for him at the end." Clark made it a good night for Fultz, as he was driving one of the cars out of Fultz's shop.
VanDoorn, the series champion, fought a car with no power steering. "I lost power steering around eighty laps. Maybe if I hadn't we might have had something for him."
But the night belonged to Fultz, who dedicated the win to his son. "The car was really good, all the guys worked really hard on it. It's the car we're running at Winchester, we put a brand new Jeff Hamner spec motor in it, the first time we've run one of them. The car was pretty much flawless, but it was tight and I lost power steering right at the beginning, so I just kind of rode and took my time. We didn't know what the tire outcome was going to be but after fifty laps they looked really good. As hard as I wanted to push it I could pull away, if I wanted to ride I could ride. I'm thankful to win any race and especially a CRA race and to win one for my son Johnny means the world to me. It's been a tough week, and I'd rather be in the race car and around all these people than sitting at home."
