UARA at Concord Preview ... Again

Story by: Langley Austin ~ langley@RACE22.com

Concord, NC(November 13, 2009) -- It's that time of year again ... time to end the UARA-STARS Series 2009 campaign and this weekend at Concord Speedway the season will grind to a halt.

By the time 6:00pm rolls around this Saturday night the championship, Rookie of the Year and the race itself will all have a winner decided ... some will be celebrating, some will be upset, some will wish they had done something different either in that race or sometime this season and some will be glad the season is over.

Here's the RACE22.com preview for the UARA-STARS third trip to Concord this season with Paddy Rodenbeck taking a win in the first, mother nature snagging the second and this the season finale primed with top Late Model Stock Car stars and more set to take the green flag.

NEAR PERFECT
Brandon McReynolds press release this past weekend following Kingsport Speedway said that he had a "near perfect" weekend pacing the Friday practice until five minutes to go, pacing the only practice session on Saturday, qualifying on the pole and leading every lap of the race. "Near Perfect" is exactly what he'll have to do this weekend at Concord Speedway and we know from past performances he know's his way around the 1/2 mile 'super speedway of short tracks'.

McReynolds despite being not 100% during the last trip to Concord two weeks ago, qualifying on the pole despite having NASCAR Camping World East Series and previous Concord Speedway UARA-STARS Series winner, Matt DiBenedetto standing by for him in case he couldn't race. McReynolds then carried out that "near perfect" weekend last weekend and this weekend, now that he should be completely back to health, the competition should beware.

TITLE TIME
While it's still mathematically possible for Jamey Caudill to overcome the 47 point deficit that he's facing this weekend, by most accounts it appears that Matt McCall will be the first ever two-time UARA-STARS Series champion. McCall, the 2005 series champion returned to the series this season for his first full-time run since his championship four years ago and he made the most of it. McCall's goal coming into this season was to be the first champion to compete on a regular basis in two different cars, which he has done driving Jerry Moody's "Pig Rig" Ford Fusion and Tom Pistone's "Pistone LTO" Cadillac/Toyota.

Despite the deficit, Caudill's not going to give up, the veteran driver with 97 career Late Model Stock Car victories and series wins leader in the UARA, will put his best foot forward this weekend and have to hope that McCall has issues to win the championship. For Caudill this will be his second 2nd place finish in the UARA points and his third top three finish in three attempts at a championship. Ironically if Caudill isn't able to win the championship he will have been the man to finish second in both of McCall's championships.

THE FIGHT FOR FOURTH
Coleman Pressley(1230), Paddy Rodenbeck(1217), Garrett Campbell(1206) ... that's the seperation between fourth, fifth and sixth in the points standings and these guys each certainly would like to hold that position by the end of the Concord race. Rodenbeck certainly appears to have momentum on his side, first the momentum of overcoming a poor qualifying effort at Kingsport to finish fourth and the confidence he has to carry into Concord, given he was the last winner there.

However, Pressley seems to have hit his stride late in the season picking up his first career UARA-STARS Series win at Hickory a few weeks back, but Concord's a different beast and he'll have to be on his game to hold down the fourth position. Campbell might be in better position heading into this weekend's race if not for his poor performance last week at Kingsport. Kingsport is a tough track and Campbell let it get the best of him and Concord isn't exactly the easiest track, so Campbell will have to have it all together and that would mean he needs to remember to bring his radios, show up at the drivers meeting and well ... we'll see what he forget's this week.

NO MORE ENGINE TROUBLES ... PLEASE!
Kyle Grissom has had his share of engine troubles as of late, he's not been blowing engines, but he's been experiencing a couple of cracked pistons. Grissom, being the pro that he is, he was able to catch the issue before he tore the engine up, but after having to change an engine before practice at Concord two weeks ago and after practice last Friday at Kingsport, he's got to be hoping his issues are cured.

HONORING HIS GRANDMOTHER
Brennan Poole had his hood lettered up during the series last trip to Concord two weeks ago in honor of his grandmother, Rochelle Nielsen, who has been battling breast cancer for years. Rochelle made the trip out for the rainy weekend at the end of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness month to see Brennan race for the first time since he moved to Late Model Stock Cars.

Even though it's no longer Breast Cancer Awareness month, he'll be honoring her again this weekend at Concord with her in attendance and he'd just love to pull off his first career UARA-STARS Series win for his grandmother. He's hoping he'll have a better time this time around at Concord after struggling through practice and pulling off a pretty good lap to post a top ten qualifying effort before rain washed the race out. This time he'll have to hope that they unload the car fast and he's able to get a top five qualifying effort to put himself in contention for that elusive first win.

GET YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT
Scott Turlington wasn't at Kingsport Speedway last weekend and while it might be partially due to the fact that he lives in Richmond, a long drive from Kingsport, TN, he was off at a friends wedding. Turlington, however didn't have anything to lose given that he was in ninth in points and couldn't fall out as the tenth place driver Michael Rouse was too many points behind and he didn't show up either, but come on Scott ... Get Your Priorities Straight!

HAS MATT D. CAUGHT THE BUG
When Matt DiBenedetto returned to the UARA-STARS Series and returned to Concord Speedway two weeks ago to stand by for Brandon McReynolds, he must have caught that 'racing bug'. Matt will now return to Concord this weekend to compete in the race himself and he'll be driving the same car he won with last October in this same race.

Matt will be behind the wheel of Steve DeWalt's #18(was 44, but Lee Tissot is entered for this race) Dodge Charger, the same one that he won with last fall before being disqualified for an engine infraction. DiBenedetto and DeWalt are both sure that they won't have any inspection issues and will still be right up front and ready to get another win together. The competition should look out for sure as DiBenedetto is really strong at Concord and that car is certainly a strong piece.

KING'S DEBUT AGAIN
Clint King is ready to make his UARA-STARS Series debut ... again. After the rain washed out his first weekend, the young driver is ready to go again at an attempted debut in the most competitive racing series in the country. King, who was the 2008 Pro Challenge Series National Champion and won four Late Model Truck races this season in limited starts, really opened some eyes when he was one of the fastest in practice two weeks ago.

King, however then faltered in qualifying, hitting the rev-limiter chip in his car costing him an estimated two-tenths and putting him outside the top ten on the charts. This time he's hoping that he and his team are better prepared and while he's looking just to log laps, he might just be a top ten contender when the green flag falls on the UARA-STARS 150.

It's back to Concord Speedway we go for the season finale of the UARA-STARS Series.

Brandon McReynolds was "near perfect" last weekend at Kingsport Speedway and he's hoping to carry that king of momentum back into Concord Speedway, where he was the pole sitter in the rain washed event two weeks ago.

Veteran's Jamey Caudill(50) and Matt McCall(23) will decide the championship this weekend at Concord Speedway, but Caudill will have to overcome a 47 point deficit to win the title.

Paddy Rodenbeck(81) is chasing Coleman Pressley(59) for fourth while at the same time being chased by Garrett Campbell(12).

Kyle Grissom has been experiencing some engine issues lately, but he's hoping that's all over with as they head back to Concord.

Top: Brennan Poole's mom, Erin(left) and her mom & Brennan's grandmother, Rochelle(right) talk in between practices two weeks ago at the rained out UARA-STARS Series race.
Bottom: Brennan's car had a Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon honoring his grandmother at Concord and last week at Kingsport.

Matt DiBenedetto carries the checkered flag last fall after winning the UARA race at Concord Speedway and he'll be back in that same car in this weekend's 150-lap race.

Clint King was upset after his qualifying run which put him far outside the top ten after the young driver had made a huge splash in practice, timing in among the fastest cars.

RACE22.com "At the TRACK!" Coverage will continue this weekend at Concord Speedway with LIVE Coverage of all the action from practice to the 150-lap race event.
