Concord UARA-STARS 150 Preview -- October 29, 2009
Story by: Langley Austin ~ langley@RACE22.com
Concord, NC(October 29, 2009) -- On Saturday night another chapter in the UARA-STARS 2009 season will play out and if the first 14 races of the season are indication of what we might be seeing, we're in for another treat at Concord Speedway.
Most of you have heard about the ongoing battle between Matt McCall, the series points leader and 2004 series champion and series wins leader, Jamey Caudill, but the storylines are a plenty heading into this weekends race at Concord. From local favorites to Nationwide drivers invading to a prominent series driver being possibly sidelined for this race and so much more ... we've got all the details to get you ready for the next to last race in the points championship!
VETERAN WARFARE -- Round 3
What started as a heated exchange at Newport Speedway in August overflowed as McCall got into the back of Caudill on the final lap at Dillon in September turning him around for the lead. McCall then took the checkered flag, but due to UARA rules he was penalized to the tail of the field while Caudill steamed over the incident.
Caudill wasn't happy with the incident and wasn't afraid to tell anyone after the Dillon race.
"You saw it man; hell I just got run into," said Caudill. "I got accused of getting somebody to wreck him last week at Newport, that didn't have anything to do with anything". "His(McCall's) dad came down and jumped in my s&%$ saying the 81(Rodenbeck) and me were teamed up and trying to wreck him and he's(Paddy) running for a championship just like we are(Caudill's brother Jeff is Rodenbeck's crew chief)."
"Jerry Moody owns that race car, I've drove his race car for a long time, he's been real good to me. If it were Matt's car, I would of drove mine slap through it. The 51(McCall) is in a position to win the championship, but he's made his bed, he's gonna have to lay in it for the last 3 races," continued a very angry, Caudill.
McCall really didn't have a lot to say about the incident, but shared his view either way.
"I guess you just can't race in this series apparently," explained McCall. "Caudill went in there a little high that last lap, I got in there a little hard and touched him just a little and he just lost it. He had been loose in for a while there and had been chopping me off."
McCall went on to say it was just a "racing deal", but Danny McCall, Matt's father had a lot more to say about the issue and what Caudill had to say about him.
"You know there's always two sides to every peanut butter sandwich," the elder McCall started off and from there he explained his side, which you can read on by CLICKING HERE.
Round two of the on-track issues came in the rescheduled date at Hickory just two weeks ago, when Caudill got spun in between turns one and two with McCall to his inside. First let me say, I didn't see this wreck and don't know what happened, but many people's account had Andy Loden making contact with Caudill turning him and it all went down hill from there.
Caudill while spinning gassed his car up and tried to take McCall with him and then after failing to do so, he retaliated against McCall under the green flag shortly after the restart. Caudill slammed McCall and McCall should have wrecked, but somehow saved the car, but the UARA officials saw this incident and gave Caudill a stop and go penalty.
This battle is sure to continue as Caudill chases his first series championship and during an interview with Speed51.com he said "I'll have my day" and Concord could be a rough place for this type of action to occur with the high speeds of the 1/2 mile track.
FIRST TIMERS and REPEATERS
If you're Ross Furr, Matt DiBenedetto or Paddy Rodenbeck then Concord Speedway is a special place for you as all four of these drivers won their first UARA-STARS Series race in one of the five previous races on the 1/2 mile speedplant. Furr and Matt DiBenedetto are repeat winners there, but DiBenedetto can only officially claim one win there after being disqualified out of last years season finale.
Chad Mullis inherited the victory last year after DiBenedetto's disqualification to pick up his second career UARA-STARS victory. With the track laying claim to three first time winners in the first five races held there some of the young guys looking for their first win have to be excited about their chances including Brennan Poole, who everyone in Late Model Stock Car racing feels is on the verge of breaking through. Poole has been very strong recently including his first appearance at Martinsville Speedway where if not for a bad call late in the race he might well have won the race.
SUPER-SUB
If you were going to get someone to substitute for you at Concord Speedway who would you call? Of course on your short list would be the guy who seems to have the track mastered, Matt DiBenedetto and Matt D. might just climb aboard one of the best cars with one of the best crew chief's in the business on Saturday night.
Where would this kind of substitute driver come in handy? Team McReynolds may just have an open seat this weekend after Brandon McReynolds had a little surgery last week and may not be able to return to the seat of the car. We're hoping Brandon will get better in time to go racing, but he couldn't have a better young driver willing to get in the car and play super-sub for him than Matt D., who is fresh off his Nationwide Series debut where he qualified fourth and finished 14th.
LOCAL FLAVOR
Everytime you come to Concord Speedway there's a little 'local flavor' that comes into the mix and this time will be no exception. Roger Lee Newton has been testing already and many people figure it's a sure thing that two time winner there, Ross Furr will be running and we know both of these guys will be strong. Clint Mills is another local who is always a contender there and he may be there as well.
Another guy who is far from local, but often competes in the Concord UARA races is Wayne, West Virginia's Davin Scites. Scites finished eighth there earlier this season and after having some issues in the Bailey's 300 at Martinsville Speedway after starting on the pole for the third straight year, he's got to be hungry for a strong run. Scites can be included in this local section because he considers Concord one of his favorite tracks after winning an ASA Series race there several years back.
ROOKIE STRIPE
Not many drivers make their first start in the UARA-STARS at Concord Speedway, because the track is 'scary fast', but Clint King will do just that this weekend. King, who has four wins this season in Late Model Trucks has never competed in a Late Model Stock Car or at Concord Speedway, but he will have his bright yellow rookie stripe this weekend as he gets his feet wet.
King hopes to follow in the footsteps of Matt DiBenedetto, who in just his second UARA start and first at Concord was able to take home the win, but DiBenedetto is the only rookie to ever win at UARA race on the 1/2 mile speedplant.
King is certainly hoping his first outing in the UARA turns out better than another up and coming young driver, Logan Ruffin, who made his first start in the spring Concord race and had most of the field mad at him after causing several crashes including one that destroyed Kyle Grissom's car and another that destroyed Kyle Moon's car. Ruffin made a ton of rookie mistakes and left with most of the field wanting to return the favor.
N'WIDE INVASION and MORE
Steven Wallace has been known to run a few Late Model Stock Car races in his off time and the former UARA-STARS winner will return to his roots as he takes on the stars of the UARA this weekend. Wallace, who is a NASCAR Nationwide Series regular, already has a win in his Late Model Stock Car this season and will no doubt be a strong contender this weekend in the 150-lap race.
Along with Wallace there are a few other drivers expected to make a rare start in the UARA including Brandon Dean, who most recently finished fifth in his only UARA-STARS Series start this season at Dillon Motor Speedway back on September 19th. Dean was a season long contender at Motor Mile Speedway where he finished third in the points and is now driving for the same team that Shaun Mangum won the pole with in the spring race at Concord this season.
MR. OCTOBER
In September, no one would have blamed Coleman Pressley had he simply walked away from the UARA-STARS Series as he hadn't really been in contention to win all season long except for the Myrtle Beach race, but since turning 21 this month he's really turned his season around. Pressley first won the Fall Brawl at Hickory Motor Speedway three weeks ago and then the following week turned it around with his first career victory in the UARA series.
But, now Pressley is going to have to prove that he's more than a one track wonder with his two victories at Hickory and get a win in one of these last two touring races. He finished 10th after starting 17th in his first start on the Concord track in April and will be hoping to improve on that in this weekend's race.
TENNESSEE BOUND
The final race of the 2009 UARA-STARS Series campaign will play out on unfamiliar territory for most of the UARA-STARS Series regulars as the series will go to Kingsport Speedway in Kingsport, TN. Located just down the road from Bristol, TN, the Kingsport track has been shut down since the fall of 2002. With over seven years of the track laying dormant it could produce some very interesting racing as the season comes to a close.
Many drivers from Tennessee will make their first start of the season with the tour hoping to get a chance to compete on the hometown track. Combine these guys with the regulars of the tour and you could very well have one of the largest fields of the season and with the support that has been thrown behind this race by the race fans in Kingsport and surrounding areas, the crowd could also be one of the largest of the season.

The contact at Newport Speedway between Matt McCall(23) and Paddy Rodenbeck(81) that started a heated exchange between McCall's dad, Danny and Jamey Caudill, whose brother is Rodenbeck's crew chief.
The contact from Matt McCall(51) at Dillon Motor Speedway that spun Jamey Caudill(50) from the lead and left McCall being penalized by UARA-STARS Officials. The lower photo is the chat between McCall and Caudill where Caudill refused McCall's apology and hand shake after he was spun.
Jamey Caudill(50) got turned around again at Hickory before retaliating on Matt McCall(23) later and getting a stop and go penalty which caused him to finish poorly and fall over 50 points behind McCall in the title battle.
Ross Furr after his repeat win in the third ever Concord UARA-STARS race.
Matt DiBenedetto repeated his inagural race win last fall, before being disqualified.
After having surgery last week, Brandon McReynolds may have to give way to Matt DiBenedetto for this weekend's race.
Local driver, Roger Lee Newton has been very successful on the Concord track, but has not been able to get a UARA-STARS victory there.
Clint King is hoping to have some instant success in his first UARA-STARS start.
Shaun Mangum won the pole for the spring Concord UARA race, but Brandon Dean is now driving the Kiker Tree Service car that Mangum drove that day.
Mr. October, Coleman Pressley has bagged two wins this month, but at the same track so he's hoping to pick up a third win on another track.
Kingsport Speedway will host the season finale for the UARA-STARS Series, but most of the series drivers will be making their first start as the track has been shut down since 2002.
Personally, I attended the last two races at this track back in 2002 and I'm thrilled with the UARA-STARS Series deciding to try and resurrect the 3/8 mile concrete oval. The racing on this track is incredible and with the UARA-STARS regulars including McCall and Caudill having never raced here it could make for an interesting ending to the season.
