Myrtle Beach, SC ~ Here we are once again. Time for a winter vacation for most, a little elbow grease, and some hard racing with a great field of cars. Every year the tracks close for the season and the big end of year races take place. And this is one everybody wants to win, and enjoy themselves while they do it. What better place to have all this happen at than the "Grand Strand", Myrtle Beach S.C.
Coming into the 2008 running of the Myrtle Beach 400, it seems that there is more talk than ever about the field of cars. Many drivers who have never ventured to the annual event will be making their first start at Myrtle Beach Speedway, including UARA Series regular Roger Lee
Newton. Roger Lee might be at a disadvantage in experience at Myrtle Beach, but he will have much help on the pit box with Dexter Canipe, Sr. calling the shots. Canipe is the only person in history to win a National Championship as a driver(1997) and also take the NASCAR Craftsman Mechanic of the Year award(2004). It should be one "dynamic duo".
The future of the Nationwide series will be making appearance at the beach also, as Austin Dillon, Grandson of Richard Childress, will be trying to make the prestigious race for the first time. Austin attempted to make the race in 07' driving an Alex Yontz' backup car, but fell just short. The youngster did open some eyes though and coming off a 4th place finish in just his second Nationwide Series start a few weeks ago, he is ready to tame the best racers in the country this weekend. Be sure to stay tuned to Race22.com this week for breaking news related to Austin. Other notables have been working on their cars in the past few weeks preparing for the big show. Rodney Cook is coming down in his Hess Monte Carlo, and has high expectations after a great run last year was spoiled by battery problems. Rookie driver Garrett Campbell, who won his first ever LMSC race earlier this year, has just put a new body on his ride and will have sponsorship on the side on the car for the first time this year. And of course you have your regular heavy hitters. Frank Deiny Jr., Matt DiBenedetto, Jamie Yelton, David Triplett, Matt McCall and BJ Mackey will all be there to get it on. And of course you read it here on RACE22.com first that Sprint Cup Series and Craftsman Truck driver Chad McCumbee will be coming back to his home track, as well as Hooters Pro Cup Rockingham winner Clay Rogers, in the same Hess "house" car that he took the UARA pole with at Concord a few weeks ago. And who can forget last years winner Sam Yarbrough, and the other dominant cars of 2007 including Tommy Lemons Jr., Alex Yontz and Stuart Ricks. It looks to be the one of the most competitive weekends ever at the beach, and party kicks off on Thursday......literally. Practice starts on Thursday, but the party will be that night, as Tom Pistone from PerformanCenter Racing Warehouse will have their first annual "Customer Appreciation Party". The 2009 Pistone LTO chassis will be on display, and adult drinks, food and games will be offered. It kicks off at 8pm at the Sea Mist Resort, only 1.5 miles south of the old Pavilion(center of Myrtle) on Ocean Blvd. Hope to see you all there, and if ya can't make the party, it will be going on all weekend at the speedway, concluding with the Seneca Tobacco 250 on Sunday afternoon at 12:30pm. |
