Lucama, NC ~ It was a wild day of events at Southern National Raceway Park ... that's a mild statement compared to the events, but we'll give you a quick look at the 2008 version of the Thanksgiving Classic.

The action started today hot and heavy with many divisions taking to the track, but we're focusing on the Super Late Model and Late Model Stock Car portions of the event. The Super Late Models took to the track first with Clay Jones leading the field down to the green flag. Jones was out front, but behind him the positions were changing nearly as often as he crossed the line counting up the

laps.

Preston Peltier started shotgun on the field, but was showing signs of being very strong racing up near the front in the 14 car field as the race wore on, but Jones was still out front showing the way. On lap 27 Alex Fleming, who had been hounding Jones for the lead, made his way into the op spot. Jones got the lead back when on lap 66 when Fleming and Shelton McNair made contact and he would hold the position to the lap 75 halfway break.

On lap 83, McNair stole the lead away from Jones and although Jones put up a fight he held the position until during the late laps both Peltier and Jones get by McNair for the lead. Peltier after gaining the lead never relinquished it and held off Jones to the finish.

Up next would be the Late Model Stock Car portion of the Thanksgiving Classic which in itself would turn the Late Model Stock Car racing world upside down. With Jamey Caudill on the pole and being flanked on the outside by "Wild Child", Doug Godsey it was going to be an interesting 200-lap event and it played out just that way.

Before the start of the race Jamie Yelton has a little trouble as well as Terry Brooks, Jr., who blows an engine and heads to pit road after just two laps. Yelton makes it back out on the track, but only last a little over 30 laps before parking for the day. Meanwhile the field is racing very hard as Caudill jumps out front on the start with Darrell Wallace, Jr. moves up to second from his fourth place starting position with Deac McCaskill, Doug Godsey and Tommy Lemons, Jr. in tow.

Racing was hot and heavy and as the field comes around for lap 33, the big wreck happens with many cars getting involved including; Matt DiBenedetto, Yelton, Ryan Rhodes, Corey Strickland, Clay Rogers, Scott Wise, Brad Brinkley, Michael Rouse and Chad Kendrick are all involved. Caudill gets a good restart and he's getting away from the rest of the field as he makes his way through lapped traffic and is making it look easy as the rest of the field continues to struggle to get around the same lapped cars.

Rodney Cook is having one of his best runs of the season as he runs in his family owned ride as he runs in the top five. Darrell Wallace, Jr. was also having a great run, but after a caution involving Jonathan Cash, Greg Barnette, Rusty Skewes and Russ Ellis he gets tagged by Skewes under the caution cutting down a tire. Wallace would race back up, but lost a great chance to challenge Caudill for the win.

UARA-STARS Champion, Jake Crum gets tangled up with Godsey, Thomas Burbage and Skewes and this caution will open the door for Wallace to get back on the lead lap. Deac McCaskill now in the lead with just over 50 laps to go, but just around the 25-lap remaining mark in the race Caudill and McCaskill get together for the lead with McCaskill going spinning. This would be an important incident at the end of the race.

The spin by McCaskill also ended the great run by Cook, who narrowly clipped McCaskill and cut down a tire. With ten laps to go Caudill was out front with Joey Coulter second, Lemons third, Davin Scites fourth and Cash in fifth. Caudill raced hard to the finish and captured the checkered flag first, but during the victory lane celebration Caudill was informed that he was being penalized one lap for the incident with McCaskill and the win would be awarded to Coulter.

For Coulter it was his first "big race" victory and although the circumstances were a little shady, I'm sure the kid will take the win any way he can get it. The decision for Caudill to be penalized following the race nearly 25 laps after the incident took place was devastating to Caudill and crew, but a lot of people were mad and we'll have a whole lot more Monday evening and throughout the week as there will be plenty of fallout from a crazy weekend at Southern National Raceway Park.
