Rockingham, NC ~ It's time once again here in 2008, for another visit to one of the best tracks ever built, Rockingham Speedway. The legendary battles of the past still loom heavy in every ones hearts at "The Rock", but it is indeed taking ground as being a new venue to the "up and comers" who never had the chance to witness the racing of years past. This Saturday will mark the second big event since the reopening of the track, the Black's Tire American 200 for the Hooters Pro Cup Series will roll off at 1pm Saturday afternoon. Not only is this the final event to
decide a series champion for 2008, it is once again a chance to show
support of a track that has put on some of the best racing ever witnessed in the Carolinas'.
After a successful ARCA series event back in May, this one should be twice as competitive, as Benny Gordon goes in as the point leader looking to collect his 2nd series championship. But he'll have his work cut out for him, Mark McFarland and Jay Fogleman are nipping at his heels. McFarland is only 27 points back after having a stellar 2008 season, picking up 3 wins, 3 poles, and leading a whopping 536 laps. Fogleman is the veteran trying for his first Pro Cup title, and has been consistant this year, picking up his first win since 2003 two weeks ago at Southern National Speedway. The vet is 109 points out, but he'll be making his 200th series start at Rockingham, and with a little luck on his milestone day he could very well walk away with the championship.
The action really starts on Friday, as the Pro Cup drivers will climb aboard for time trials at 4pm. Then we will relive some tradition of the past at Rockingham, and watch the teams compete in the 2008 BF Goodrich Tires Pit Crew Challenge starting at 5pm Friday afternoon. For many years the NASCAR pit crew challenge was held at Rockingham, and it looks as if another tradition can be added to the list of continuing at the track. If you can only make it out Saturday, be sure to get there plenty early for the pre-race autograph session starting at 11:30am. The green flag flies at 1pm, and if you hold onto your ticket stub you can go though the tunnel into the infield after the race and enjoy a great concert by country music legend John Anderson.
Well I really can't see any reason that I wouldn't see all you folks this weekend at "The Rock". Good food, good racing, good music = good times. Come on out and support the track and the race, you won't be disappointed, and it is only going to make the future of racing here in the sand hills shine brighter. And I promise, it will get brighter. See ya there...
