Lucas Wins His Fifth Straight at Florence

Story by: Chris Owens ~ chris@RACE22.com

Timmonsville, SC(July 26, 2010) - With summer in full swing, the heat was on Friday night at the Florence Motor Speedway. Averitt Lucas has the track figured out with four wins in a row coming into Friday night's race. The regulars where all out Friday night, Branham, Shorter, Smith, Altman Jr., the Adams family all were in action to see who could top Lucas in the forty lap dash.

To recap the action from last week, Lucas spun off turn two while racing Jamey Lee for the lead. Thinking he had no chance at winning the race he parked his car on pit road. His crew chief then told him the car was fine so he went back out to salvage whatever he could. Low and behold Jamey Lee and Rudy Branham would make contact on the restart sending both to the rear. After an accident with the safety van and Jamey Lee's car we finally resumed and watched Lucas charge through the field to claim his fourth win in a row.
In qualifying, Lucas started where he finished last week laying down a lap of 18.759. Justin Shorter timed second with Strom Altman Jr. third, Archie Adams Jr. fourth and Jordan Smith fifth.

Lucas got a great jump on the start and set sail on the field. Shorter fell into second spot and rode there the entire race. Fifth place starter Jordan Smith had problems on the start and quickly found him eighth after one lap.

Smith would be the first caution of the night pulling to a stop in turn one on lap five. After being pushed back to pit road, the crew made a few adjustment and sent him back out onto the track.

Shorter tried once again to give Lucas a run but nothing was doing on the restart. Now working his way up through the field was Rudy Branham. After starting out back with a terrible qualifying run Branham quickly made his way past the cars in front of him. He now found himself battling with young Strom Altman Jr. for the fourth spot.

After starting fifth, Archie Adams Jr. quickly found himself trying to hold on to a terrible racecar. Lap seventeen saw him bring out the second caution of the night when he came to a stop in turn four. After making it back to the pits the crew went to work on his car trying to make it better.
Once again, Justin Shorter tried to get around Lucas on the restart but Averitt was too strong up top and quickly pulled away from the field. Shorter quickly fell in line in second and pulled away from third place running Branham.

After winning his first race at Florence just a few months ago, Raef Judd was back to trying and go for his second. Qualifying saw him only take one lap which was the slowest of the eight cars there. He never got the setup right in the race as he struggled to get to the top five. The car looked loose all race long and he quickly found himself sideways early on. Raef brought the car home in once piece in the seventh spot. Lap twenty three saw Judd bring out the third and final caution of the night when came to a stop in turn two with no power under the hood. He was able to get his car fired on pit road and continued on.

On the restart Lucas got the jump once again and never looked back taking his fifth race in a row at Florence. Justin Shorter came home second, Rudy Branham third, Strom Altman Jr fourth and Archie Adams Sr. came home fifth.

For the second week in a row, the Super Stock cars that showed up ran with the Late Models once again. Brad Dewitt won his first race back on July fourth and since then has found his groove running competitively with the Late Models. Last week he came home in the sixth position on the track. This week he showed yet again he can run with the Late Models as he came home in the fifth spot on track.

There has been a lot of talk lately on what is going to happen with Florence. Are they going to move to every other week and run Late Models opposite of Dillon? Are they going to stay with Friday nights and hope the overall car count picks up? Who knows at the moment but if anything is done Race22.com will bring it to you first.

Next week the Late Models are back in action with yet another forty lap main event. Racing along side of them or the Super Stocks/Chargers, Stock 4 Cylinder, and the Bombers.
