Dillon, SC(July 26, 2010) - After the wreck fest two weeks ago we returned Saturday night for another fifty lap Late Model race at Dillon. Noticeably missing from the pit area Saturday night was Hal Goodson whose crew chief and car owner had a falling out over the week which left Goodson without a ride this week.
Jon Lane continued and set fast time in practice laying down a lap of 19.155 seconds. Ben Stanton, Doug Barefoot, Joe Heigl and Logan Bunning rounded out the top five. Newcomer Gary Davis brought out his #71 car to play with the Dillon regulars. Coming along with him was Motor Mile Speedway and Fathead Racing driver Matt McCall. McCall wasn't at Motor Mile since the motor for his car wasn't ready so he came down to help out Davis who helps him at Motor Mile.
Jon Lane backed up his practice time in qualifying taking the pole for the fifty lap affair. Starting along side would be Joe Heigl followed by Gary Davis and Doug Barefoot. Rounding out the top five would be Archie Adams Jr. who was not in his normal #17 entry. Ricky Locklair Jr. would fill in for Wayne Locklair who practiced and qualified the #56W car. This would be Locklair Jr's first Late Model start.
Jon Lane got the jump on the start and checked out from the rest of the field. Heigl fell into the second spot and rode for the majority of the race. Doug Barefoot and Gary Davis would battle hot and heavy for several laps with Ben Stanton joining the battle a few laps later. Stanton would move by both Davis and Barefoot and move up to the third position.
Davis now had to deal with the twelve machine of Adams Jr. who would move by Davis and take the fifth spot. Back in the pack, Logan Bunning, Archie Adams Sr. and Jason Clark where waging an amazing battle. Adams Sr. would move past both for the seventh position moving Clark back to eight and Bunning to ninth.
The first caution of the night came out on lap seventeen when Rudy Branham stopped on the front stretch when his seat belts came undone.
Lane once again got the jump on the restart and checked out by a full straightaway over second Heigl and third Stanton. Ben Stanton now looked to take the second spot from Heigl. Swapping the position over a four lap span Heigl finally got the spot and pulled away. Gary Davis was now on the move doing battle with Doug Barefoot for the fourth spot.
Archie Adams Sr.'s night was over after just twenty laps when he stopped in turn one with motor problems. This brought the field back together and gave Joe Heigl another shot at finding a way around Lane for the lead.
Jon Lane wasn't having anything to do with Joe Heigl as he jumped back out to almost a straightway lead over the field on the restart. Once again, Ben Stanton and Joe Heigl traded the second position for several laps when Heigl finally got position of Stanton.
Gary Davis was now all over the back bumper of Stanton for third who had Doug Barefoot all over him. Your race leader Jon Lane was slowly developing a engine problem on his #56 machine. He was still running consistent times and second place wasn't catching him. After the race Lane said his motor had an issue last week where it dropped a cylinder and he thinks the same happened this week.
The only accident of the night happened on lap thirty one when Rudy Branham went around in turn two. No contact with the inside or outside wall was made and he continued on running in the tenth spot.
With and engine problem still lingering Lane had to deal with Heigl on the restart. Throw in Ben Stanton in the third position and the race for the lead was on. All three battled for several laps after the restart but Lane was able to clear Heigl and checked out.
Barefoot, Davis and Adams Jr. where now fighting for the fourth position. Adams Jr. was able to get by Davis for the fifth spot on lap thirty seven but Davis got back by on lap forty. Now Davis was working over Barefoot for the fourth spot. Barefoot took the spot on lap forty five and never looked back.
Back up front Jon Lane cruised to his third victory of the night beating Joe Heigl to the checkered over by over a second. Ben Stanton, Gary Davis, and Doug Barefoot rounded out the top five. Replacement driver for Wayne Locklair, Ricky Locklair Jr. came home in the tenth position bring the car home without a scratch on it in his first start.
