Elliott Takes Home the Win in Dillon's Labor Day Special Story by: Chris Romano/Contributor
Dillon, SC(September 8, 2010) -- Michael Elliott put a hurting on the Late Model field at Dillon on Labor Day, dominating the 150 lap, $3,000 to win event at the South Carolina track. He was a man with something to prove, winning the event last year only to have it taken away in tech. Elliott got by Stanton and started to reel in Calhoun, whose lead had stretched to ten car lengths. On lap thirty-six Elliott tried the outside of Calhoun in turn four, serving notice that this year he was not to be denied. Three laps later Elliott made the move stick in traffic and never looked back. The first 75 lap segment went green to checker with Elliott in front, followed by Calhoun, Stanton, Joe Heigl and Logan Bunning. Elliott was so strong only seven cars were on the lead lap by the ten minute intermission. The first yellow of the event came two laps after the restart when Bunning bounced off the turn one wall, flattening the right rear. Heigl had worked his way to third by that point and on the next restart took second from Calhoun. The next caution flew at lap one hundred two when Archie Adams, Sr., flattened a right front. During the caution Calhoun was called into the pits to check for a possible rear end seal leak, but was sent on his way and resumed his third position after no leak was detected. They should have looked harder. On lap one-hundred twenty-two the visibly smoking Calhoun was black flagged. Three laps later he slowed enough on the front stretch to draw the evening's final caution and then retired for the night. Elliott held off Heigl through all three restarts to win the $3,000 event. Jason Clark worked his way to third followed by Bunning and Archie Adams, Jr. Both Heigl and Clark knew they had nothing for Elliott. "He was gone," said Heigl. "He had a good race car. We worked all day and we had what we had. We'll give him congratulations, he did a good job." Clark planned on a strong second half. "We started off with our worst set of tires," said Clark, "and then put on the good ones at halfway and I knew we were good. My crew worked hard. We changed motors in the last two weeks and worked until midnight last night." But savoring the win was Elliott. "The car was on a rail," said the winner. "We worked on it Saturday all day and finally got it hooked up. We weren't fast in qualifying but we had a pretty good piece for the end of the race, and that's what I tested on, practicing for the end of the run and not qualifying. I picked up a groove with about fifty laps to go that really hooked the car up."
DILLON NOTES: Kudos to Marty Griggs, a regular Dillon competitor, who contributed $1,000 to the winner's share for the track's annual Labor Day event ... ASA's version of NASCAR's Lucky Dog is called the Lucky Cheetah. At the rate Elliott was lapping cars on Monday, it didn't matter ... Dillon's Charger division looks like a Limited Late Model class, in fact, several cars were sporting decals for the new Limited Late Model series. But the IMCA-type modifieds allowed to run in the division finished one-two on Monday night. Welcome to RACE22.com ... The Home of Late Model Stock Car Racing ...
