Edwards Doubles Up on Victories Again at Langley

Hampton, VA(July 27, 2010) -- For the second time in two weeks the Langley Speedway Late Model Stock division arrived at the track preparing to do battle in twin 50 lap competitions but this time around there was a bit of a twist. The track had recently made repairs to the track surface which consisted of the addition of a new access road in place of the rumble strips that had lined the inside of the turns.

Just like the week before, Greg Edwards laid claim to the pole position for the first race after qualifying with a lap time of 16.003 with Woody Howard, Danny Edwards Jr., Nick Smith and Brandon Gdovic all qualifying within a tenth. As the race got underway both Greg and Danny Edwards Jr., were able to clear Howard dropping him back to third for the opening few laps. But the green flag run was short lived as the caution appeared on lap 6 setting up the night's first double-file restart.

Back under green Greg Edwards cleared his brother and left a hole that was quickly filled by Howard who used the space to take over second place and go after the leader. Woody Howard and Greg Edwards would soon go on to have an intense battle over several laps with Howard even leading a lap before Edwards reclaimed it and began to put space between himself and the rest of the field.

Two teams suffered similar fates around lap 13 when both Kyle Waltz and Paul DeBolt found their races cut short due to overheating issues, Waltz's oil and water temperature gauges both read over 240 degrees when his car pulled into his pit. Not long after the second caution flag of the race would appear for a multicar spin off turn 2. On the restart, Edwards and Howard would once again battle side-by-side for about a lap before Edwards would gain the advantage.

As one Edwards cleared Howard another stepped up to the plate as Danny Edwards Jr., went to the inside of Howard for second but this time around Howard would win the challenge. But it was the points leader C.E. Falk on the move as he had climbed from the sixth position on the restart up to challenge and pass Edwards Jr., for third and set his sights on Howard for second. Just past halfway Falk would make his move on Howard and race door to door for a lap before Falk gained the clear advantage.

Up front the landscape remained unchanged for the second half of the race as Greg Edwards sailed onto the win by just over a second and a half over second place C.E. Falk. Danny Edwards Jr., Woody Howard and Mark Wertz would round out the top five in race one and file into the pits to make adjustments and ready to start in those same positions for race two.

As race two started Greg Edwards would do the same to Falk as he did to Howard in the first race, leaving him high and dry on the outside. Unfortunately for Falk he would not be able to drop down as early Howard did causing him to fall back to sixth place when the caution appeared for Doug Warren's spin on lap 4. On the restart the inside lane continued to prevail as Greg Edwards cleared his brother and continued to pace the field.

As Greg Edwards got out by himself, Danny Edwards Jr., found himself locked in a battle for second with Mark Wertz for multiple laps. The field was once again slowed as a big wreck in turns 3 and 4 sent cars and dirt everywhere prompting race officials to put out the red flag while they cleaned the inside lane. The next green flag run would only last a handful of laps before the caution would reappear for a spin on lap 19.

On the ensuing restart real trouble happened when Nick Smith got loose off turn two making contact with C.E. Falk and triggering a huge scuffle which resulted in many cars getting involved amongst those being C.E. and Wes Falk, Matt Waltz, Doug Warren, Dean Shiflett and Terry Carroll. Back under green Greg Edwards continued to dominate the night quickly clearing his brother who was able to drop to the inside lane as Mark Wertz and Brandon Gdovic battled for third place. The final caution of the night came on lap 24 as a leaking left rear tire sent Rick Gdovic for a quick spin on the front stretch.

On the final restart the Edwards brothers quickly got to single file while the rest of the field restarted their battles for spots. With 20 laps left in the race the front three were spread a bit across the track as Greg Edwards lead by about six car lengths over Danny Edwards Jr., who had a similar advantage over rookie Brandon Gdovic in third. The main battle on the track in the closing laps was that between Nick Smith and Mark Wertz for fourth, a battle which Smith would win in the closing laps.

At the finish, Greg Edwards would claim his second win of the night as well as his fourth straight and sixth overall win of the season by over two seconds over his brother Danny Edwards Jr. Rookie Brandon Gdovic, Nick Smith and Mark Wertz rounded out the top five. Points leader C.E. Falk rebounded from the early crash to finish seventh allowing Edwards to once again chip away at his points lead bringing the margin down to only 16 markers in the battle for the championship.
