Canipe Gets Lucky, Wins Isaac Memorial Limited Show

Story by: John Bowen/Contributor

Newton, NC(September 8, 2010) -- If one thing is for sure this year at Hickory Motor Speedway, it is the ultra competitive Limited Late Models have put on excellent shows week in and week out and we didn't expect anything less for the Bobby Issac Memorial.

Waylon Flynn would make a rare 2010 appearance at the historic 3/8 mile oval and make it count in qualifying as he would put his #51 Cadillac on the pole. Dexter Canipe, Jr. would start from the outside pole for the 13 car field.

All year it's been the Canipe, Jr. show in the Limiteds at Hickory and when the green flag fell on this 50 lap event Canipe took the lead from Waylon Flynn until a lap 2 caution for the spinning car of Brandon Hudnall. As the field comes back to the green Flynn doesn't let Canipe get to far away as he battles on the inside of Canipe who is not in his regular entry, but rather he's in the #16 Cars Plus entry for this event.

The caution would fly once again on lap 8 for none other than the spinning car of Hudnall. Canipe and Flynn would be the front row for the restart with 2010 feature winner Austin McDaniels sitting in 3rd. On the start McDaniels has shifting issues as he falls bunches the field up causing mayhem going into turn 1. The field would get sorted out and by lap 15 the real mover was Annabeth Barnes as she has now worked her way up to the 4th position right behind the top 3 of Canipe, Flynn, and Tyler Church.

Flynn continues to battle it out with Canipe for the lead and on lap 17 he would secure the spot bringing Church with him. Now with Flynn in command of the race it seems Canipe is falling back inside the top 5 quickly. The caution flies again on lap 32 for you guessed it the spinning car of Hudnall.

This caution wasn't what Barnes needed as she had worked her way to the back bumper of Canipe Jr and started putting pressure on for the 3rd position. The restart on lap 32 would be short lived as the caution would fly again just 3 laps later on lap 35 for a turn 1 wreck involving Monty Cox, Dakota Slagle, and Sheflon Clay.

This time it would be Flynn and McDaniels leading the field back to the restart. The two battle door to door for the next 3 laps before both cars slide up the track going into turn one and as McDaniels gets his machine corrected, Flynn goes spinning off the front bumper of Tyler Church. Now with Flynn out of the way McDaniels, Canipe, Church, Barnes, and Joey Harques would be your top 5.

Now with McDaniels in control of this race he looks to have the fastest car in the field as he takes the lead on the restart and would hold onto the lead as Barnes has made her way to the 3rd position right before the caution flies again on lap 46 for nobody other then the spinning car of Brandon Hudnall. This will set up for a 4 lap shootout with McDaniels and Canipe on the front row and Barnes and Church on the 2nd row.

As the green flag waves on the field McDaniels once again has shifting issues as the field scrambles to avoid contact. Barnes ducks to the inside and Church to the outside as they go into the first turn 3 wide. As the 3 cars exit turn 2 the sparks start to fly and the sheet metal begins to hit the track as Barnes goes over the on two wheels and slams the outside wall with Church.

Cars scramble every direction to avoid getting caught up in the accident but most weren't that fortunate as Joey Hargues goes hard into the turn 3 wall along with Church and Barnes. Travis Byrd went into the air as he and the 13 of Dakota Slagle were also involved in the accident.

After a lengthy red flag to clean up the carnage McDaniels would find himself sitting in the prime position as he would be on the inside of Canipe for the green flag with Mark McIntosh and Matt Piercy in the 2nd row.

McDaniels once again has shifting issues on the final restart which allows Canipe Jr to check out taking McIntosh with him. Matt Piercy makes the pass on McDaniels for 3rd and would try to hold him off but McDaniels would takes back 3rd as Canipe Jr takes the checkered flag over McIntosh and now 3rd place McDaniels. Piercy would finish 4th with Sheflon Clay bringing home 5th after both were involved in early incidents and rebounded for solid top 5 finishes.
