Weekend Wrap Up -- August 30, 2009
Compiled by: Langley Austin ~ langley@RACE22.com
Welcome to the new Weekend Wrap-Up Section where we're going to try and keep you up to date on all the things happening over the weekend of racing in Late Model Stock Cars and occasionally maybe a little Super Late Models, Pro Late Models and you never know when you might see a Modified or a Mini Stock or hey, just about anything that turns left on our regions short tracks.
Caraway Speedway:
Travis Swaim took home his 4th win of the 2009 season at Caraway Speedway over a 21-car field with Brad Brinkley, Randy Benson, Kris Bowen and Chuck Crump completing the top five finishers.
Concord Speedway:
Colt James took his second win in a row at Concord Speedway in Concord, NC, this time in the ASA South Late Model Series. James previously won the Mobil1 $5000 to win race a few weeks back and continued his streak in the ASA South race.
James beat Jeff Fultz to the finish line as he did in the $5,000 to win special event two weeks ago with Trent Snyder third, Dustin Dunn fourth and Michael Pilla completed the top five finishers. Fireworks exploded following the race after local racer, Roger Lee Newton and Snyder made contact and Newton spun. Newton retaliated after the checkered flag crashing into Snyder twice and then the two teams erupted into a brawl.

Greenville Pickens Speedway:
David Roberts took home his third win of the season at Greenville Pickens Speedway followed to the line by Randy Porter, Roger Powell, Michael Cherry and Anthony Anders(top five).
Hickory Motor Speedway/
PASS South Series
:
Chase Elliott, son of former NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, Bill Elliott continued his hot streak this season this time in the PASS South Series Super Late Models. Elliott made a last lap pass on Jeff Choquette for the victory with Choquette second, Cassius Clark, Bradley McCaskill and three-time Late Model Stock Car track champion at Hickory, Andy Loden.
Loden started 17th, but clawed his way to his first ever top five in a Super Late Model in the south, the same type of car he raced in New York before moving to North Carolina and taking up Late Model Stock Car racing. Fellow Late Model Stock Car driver, Alex Yontz started 18th, but didn't fair as well getting taken out in a lap three caution and finishing 28th of the 28 starters. Six cars went home from the race after 34-cars attempted to make the field.
Our own Corey Latham will have a complete wrap-up from this race, but Speed51.com was LIVE covering the event with their Trackside Now, so if you'd like a great detailed description of the race check them out.
Langley Speedway:
CE Falk swept twin events at Langley Speedway in Hampton, VA picking up his ninth and tenth victories of the 2009 season, making him one of the top four most dominant drivers in Late Model Stock Car racing behind Andy Mercer(13), Marty Ward(13) Kevin Leicht(9) and Philip Morris(9). In race number one last weeks winner, Woody Howard, Mark Wertz, Danny Edwards and Greg Edwards completed the top five with Howard claiming two second place finishes followed by Greg Edwards, Wertz and Dean Shiflett in race number two.
Of course our very own, Mason Dunn was in the house tonight and he'll have us a complete wrap-up this week from the Langley Speedway races. So check back for more.
Motor Mile Speedway:
Frank Deiny continued his climb to the top of the Late Model Stock Car world tonight picking up his second win of the season and putting himself just two points behind Philip Morris as the two battle for the championship. Deiny bested another stout 30-car field of cars with Jerame Donley continuing his strong runs in second, Morris finished third, Richard Boswell and Tommy Lemons completed the top five finishers.
Brandon Dean, who has been strong all season faltered a little as he came away with his worst finish of the season placing 14th and falling out of contention for this years championship at 72-points behind. Chad Harris another championship contender until the last few races started from the pole position, but after finishing seventh he remains fourth in the standings and 80-points out.
Newport Speedway/
UARA-STARS Series
:
Jamey Caudill took advantage of a late race red flag for rain to grab the lead in the final laps from local favorite, Kevin Leicht, who has won eight races there this season. The two made slight contact as Leicht tried to hold the position, but Caudill would come out on top for his 97th career Late Model Stock Car victory after leading much of the early laps of the race.
The 150-lap race saw three different leaders with outside pole winner, Matt McCall leading the opening couple of laps before pole sitter, Caudill took charge and led past halfway before giving the lead up to Leicht. Leicht would finish second with McCall nipping on his heels and Kyle Grissom coming home with a strong fourth place finish.
One of the stories of the race was rookie, Brennan Poole, who came home with a fifth place finish following his first two top ten finishes in UARA competition. Poole's top five finish was his first in UARA competition and continues some what of a roll that Poole's been on since finishing sixth in the Dwight Huffman Memorial race at Hickory Motor Speedway on July 11th. Poole has since finished eighth in the last two UARA races and fifth in his first Newport Speedway appearance, a tough track to even finish.

Orange County Speedway:
David Triplett, Jr. dominated the Late Model Stock Car portion of the night at Orange County Speedway qualifying on the pole and taking home the trophy in the end. Terry Dease, Chad Kendrick, Craig Moore, Stacy Puryear rounded out the top five in the 17-car field.
Dease made a late run at Triplett, but never was able to make a strong challenge. Tracy Chambers started toward the back of the pack and was moving her way to the front, but her run was cut short by a late race caution. Aaron Dudley, who often runs at Virginia International Raceway(VIR) road course races and even competed in the Late Model Stock Car road racing series and has been very succesful; he finished sixth in a rare oval appearance.
Our own, Rob Staley was on hand and will have more for us later.
South Boston Speedway:
In a season that seems to be filled with different and new winners, Bruce Anderson, a former Limited Late Model champion at South Boston Speedway picked up his first career win at the same track in a Late Model Stock Car. Anderson was followed to the finish by Justin Johnson, Nick Smith, Deac McCaskill and David Latour.

Jamey Caudill celebrates his 97th career Late Model Stock Car race after a late race pass on Kevin Leicht at Newport.
Lance Gatlin(13), Dylan Presnell(83) and Lee Tissot(44) make it three-wide at Newport and incredibly didn't wreck.
Paddy Rodenbeck's(81) day goes bad after contact with Kevin Leicht and then nearly makes his bad day, Brennan Poole's(5) bad day. Poole would continue and finish fifth despite a cut in his right front tire and a leak throughout the race from this contact.
