Solid Showing for Limiteds at Martinsville; Willis Fastest Overall

Martinsville Speedway Press Release

Martinsville, VA(September 17, 2009) -- Any doubts about how well the Limited Sportsman Division drivers would perform in their debut at Martinsville Speedway were dashed during Wednesday's day-long test session.

The Limited Sportsman Division, a staple of weekly race tracks across the Southeast, is set for its first-ever race on Martinsville's tough half-mile on Sept. 27 as part of the Made In America Whelen 300 weekend. Fifty-five teams showed up Wednesday for an open test and it turned into an impressive first outing.

There were a few single-car spins resulting in very little damage to the cars.

Danny Willis, Jr. was the fastest unofficially at Martinsville Speedway for the Limited Late Model Test Session on Wednesday, September 16th.

"I was surprised. I was expecting a lot more spins, especially going into the corners," said Danny Willis Jr., veteran Limited driver who finished second in the season-long points race at South Boston Speedway this year. "There were a lot of people who had never been here before, but everybody did a good job."

Most of the 55 drivers on hand Wednesday had never ventured past the track they race on a weekly basis, which made the unique long straights and tight turns of Martinsville Speedway a challenge.

"The first thing, the big thing for everybody is getting used to the track. It's so different from anything most of us have ever run," said Willis, who is from South Boston, VA. "We had to get used to taking care of the brakes in the corner and the speed we carry down the straights. You really had to keep a good eye on the brakes all day. But I can tell you, I love this track."

That affection certainly showed in Willis' on-track efforts. While there were no official times kept, his speeds were consistently on or near the top of the unofficial charts.

"I loved it. It turned out to be a pretty good day for us," said Willis.

Willis, Roger Parris Jr. of Vinton, Cory Donley of Charlotte, NC, T.J. Barron of Wilmington, NC and Brian Pembleton of Amelia led the field most of the day. A dozen or so drivers were clustered right behind them.

Willis said Wednesday's open test served its purpose.

"I think now we all have a good idea of what we need to do before we come back next week for the race," said Willis. "We made a good mock qualifying run and found out what we think we need to do for us to qualify pretty good. I think we'll have a top-20 car in qualifying."

The Made In America Whelen 300 weekend will be action-filled. The Limited Sportsman and NASCAR Modified Tour cars will practice and time trial on Saturday, Sept. 26. Only the top 26 spots in the Limited Sportsman race will be filled in qualifying.

Action kicks off on Sept 27 at 12:15 p.m. with two, 25-lap heat races to fill out the Limited Sportsman field. The top five finishers in each race will advance to the 50-lap feature, filling starting positions 27-36.

The 200-lap NASCAR Modified Tour race will begin at 1:30 p.m. followed by the 50-lap Limited Sportsman feature.

Tickets for the Made In America Whelen 300 are $25 and may be purchased by calling 877.RACE.TIX or by visiting www.martinsvillespeedway.com. Children 12 and under will be admitted free.
