Rob's Ramblings -- October 28, 2009
Story by: Rob Staley/Contributor to RACE22.com
Danville, VA(October 28, 2009) -- One day after winning the Martinsville NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race, Timothy Peters and crew chief, Chad Hendrick were on hand for the 100-lap late model finale with Kendrick entering his number 18 Ford Fusion and starting near the front of the field.
He was looking to do what Peters had done the day before and reach victory lane, but things went downhill quickly as Kendrick became a victim of the first lap melee. Outside pole starter, Craig Moore bounced off Stacy Puryear and went head on into the backstretch wall. Moore then collected Kendrick as he rebounded onto the track and both drivers were done for the day.
Frank Deiny Jr. brought three cars to the party with his FDJ Motorsports team, but it was a bittersweet day. Rusty Skewes crashed into the turn two wall after spinning on cold tires in practice and was finished for the
day without getting the chance to race. Fellow FDJ Motorsports driver, Justin Johnson driving a brand new FDJ Chassis went on to win the race with teammate Jeff Oleen finishing fifth. This was Oleen's second Late Model Stock Car start and only his third full bodied stock car start on asphalt.
Among those hand were former OCS champion, Maurice Hill and son, Ronald who raced this past season at South Boston. By all indications, it seems the younger Hill will return to his home track in 2010 and former OCS contender Leigh Caruthers was also in attendance, but says that he plans to run Sobo next season.
Tim McGuire, father of Limited Late Model champion, Michael McGuire has stated that he hopes for the team to make a few OCS Late Model starts next year during off weeks from the UARA-STARS Series schedule.
David Triplett's track championship didn't come easy, but it was Triplett's first track championship despite being the track's top winner this decade. A big congrats goes out to Triplett, McGuire and all the other champions from Orange County Speedway.
