Radford, VA(July 27, 2009) -- Mike Looney hadn't been able to put it all together this season from broken engines, crashes and many cases of simple 'bad luck', but Saturday night that all changed.
Looney didn't qualify in as the fastest car in the field, but his third place effort behind Davin Scites and Forrest Reynolds put him in a great position from the drop of the green flag. Early season dominator, Philip Morris lined-up fourth and was hoping to shake the bad luck that has kept him out of Motor Mile's victory lane since May 30th, however Morris' night would be very interesting.
Looney had his car tucked right up underneath the back bumper of Scites at the drop of the green flag and once they began to clear Reynolds, who held tough on the outside for a few laps before dropping back, Looney made his bid for the lead. Looney was kept at bay on the inside of Scites twice for early race cautions, but he still looked poised to take over the top spot.
After the second caution had been cleaned up when Derrick Lancaster and Adam Long got together and collected several other cars on lap 22, Looney was again ready to pounce on Scites for the lead. This time on lap 32 he completed the pass just before the caution waved again, this time for Jerame Donley's spin while running in the top ten.
By this point in the race there had been quite a shuffle among the top ten positions with Reynolds falling back early and Looney taking the point. The top five as they run at this point is; Looney, Scites, Morris, Reynolds and last weeks winner, Frank Deiny. Soon after the green flag waved Deiny would make his way around a crash between Morris and Reynolds that took out several of the front runners.
Reynolds would get into Morris turning him sideways as top ten runners, Tommy Lemons and Richard Boswell were collected in the crash. Boswell got the worst end of the deal as his car got turned nose first into the outside wall and his night was done. Lemons, who has won on three occasions already this season pitted several times for repairs, but continued on.
Back up front it looked as Scites was going to battle with Looney quickly after the restart, but Looney held his position each lap and fended off Scites strong challenges before pulling away from him and Deiny, who was now running third. Soon after this restart Deiny was on the move as he pulls alongside Scites and makes the move into second position.
Deiny then set his sights on Looney and he looked like he might have the car to get around him late, but a series of late race cautions kept him at bay. On the next to last restart Morris, who had survived the earlier crash and remained in the top ten, got twisted up and turned up into the outside wall on the front straightaway. He lost a couple positions, but was able to continue and finished inside the top ten.
The final caution waved on lap 72 when Lancaster and Donley tangled in turn four, which set up a three lap sprint to the finish with Looney trying desperately to hold off Deiny, who was looking for his second win in a row. Looney got a good restart, but Deiny stayed glued to his bumper until the finish and Looney came across the finish line just a little over a car length ahead of the former track champion.
For Looney it was his first win of the 2009 season and hopefully the beginning of the end to the bad luck that has plagued his team. For Deiny it was a good points day although he would have liked to have backed up the win last week, but he gained points and with only five races left and six points separating the top three, that's exactly what he needed.
Scites held on to finish third ahead of Brandon Dean, who drove a very smart race and avoided some crashes ahead of him to recover from being outside of the top ten at one time around the mid-point in the race to claim the fourth position. Dean has been one of the happy surprises this season and after a recent decision to partner with the Kiker Tree Service race team, he's only 26 points out from winning the championship. Anything could happen if this young driver continues to run as strongly as he has week-in and week-out.
Chad Harris finished fifth after struggling with the set-up of his race car all week after the BF Goodrich rubber was laid down last week by the USARacing Pro Cup Series. Harris' crew chief, Dave Roope said that the car was tight in testing, tight in the race and he just couldn't get it to loosen up, but Harris still managed to finish fifth in a strong field of 29-cars.
Jordan Pennington, who recently began driving one Frank Deiny's, FDJ Motorsports Driver Development cars came home with a sixth place finish, his best effort of the season after posting his previous best in the same car a week earlier. Pennington's best effort before hooking up with Deiny's team was a tenth place, so it seems Deiny and his team have the young driver headed in the right direction.
Morris held on to finish seventh ahead of Lemons, who rallied from his early race accident to finish eighth. Adam Long, who seemed like he couldn't catch a break getting wrapped up in someone else's mess nearly every time the caution flew finished ninth ahead of Kres VanDyke, who is driving Harris' back-up car in all the twin races this season. VanDyke is an accomplished Late Model Stock Car racer, who finished second several years ago to Jamey Caudill in the Bailey's 300 at Martinsville and missed out on winning a championship at the now defunct, Kingsport Speedway by one point to Robbie Ferguson.
Wayne Ramsey, making a rare Motor Mile appearance in his Taylor Brothers entry finished 11th with Jamie Byrd 12th, Kenny Brooks 13th, Rusty Skewes 14th and Doug Williams completed the top 15 finishers.
The second of the twin races hit the track as the last race to run on Saturday night and rain was on the horizon. Harris was starting from the pole with Dean outside, Deiny lined up third with Scites starting fourth and it looked like we were going to be in for another exciting 75-lap affair when on the second lap it all came to an end.
As the field came off of turn two on the second lap a couple of cars got twisted around and then all heck broke loose as cars began piling in, it was one of the biggest wrecks of the night and caused the field to be red flagged. Skewes, Lancaster and Williams cars were completely finished off and looked as if they would need extensive work to make it back to race in a couple weeks.
As the clean-up crew was hard at work to clear the damaged cars and get the track back in condition, a huge crack of thunder sounded and the nearly full stands began to empty and the rain hit hard washing the event out before the red flag could even be lifted.
