Colt James Wins ASA at Concord, Fight Breaks Out in Post Race

Story by: Chris Romano/Contributor to RACE22.com

Concord, NC(August 30, 2009) -- Two weeks ago Colt James won $5,000 at Concord Motorsports Park, beating Jeff Fultz to the checkers. On Saturday he won again, this time at the ASA South Late Model race, once more besting Fultz.

James was the fastest qualifier but started eighth due to the inversion of the ASA field. The beneficiary of the draw was Fultz, who qualified eighth but started the race on pole. Fultz rocketed away to the lead, survived a lap four caution, and then lead comfortably until lap thirty-seven when James took over second from Austin Kirkpatrick. James repeatedly tried to get under Fultz but to no avail. On lap forty-three the yellow flew for debris on the backstretch but Fultz was able to hang on to the lead at the restart.

Seven laps leader the yellow was out again, this time for debris in turn one. James made good on this restart and took a lead he would never relinquish.

With forty laps to go Justin Larson was making his move, getting by Kirkpatrick and then Fultz with an eye toward challenging James. It all came to naught on Lap sixty-seven when his motor blew and he hit the turn one wall. "It was smoking down the front straight," said a disappointed Larson, "and then it just grenaded."

James led at the restart but the yellow flew again for a spin by Bobby Measmer, Jr. On lap eighty three Brian Blum spun, drawing another yellow.

With four to go the race got interesting when ASA South points leader Drew Brannon got together with Kirkpatrick while contesting third, with Kilpatrick spinning. ASA had warned Brannon about rough driving in the laps preceding the contact, and he was sent to the rear.

Concord regular Roger Lee Newton moved to third, followed by Trent Snyder, and one lap after the restart they got together in turn four with Newton going around, flattening his left rear. Brandon Johnson got the worst of it, hitting the inside wall as the field scattered.

This time the ASA officials deemed the contact as a racing incident, saying that Snyder had pulled up to Newton's door, and Newton came down. This would lead to fireworks after the checkers.

James led the final three laps with Fultz in second and Snyder third. Dustin Dunn came back from spinning in Larson's oil to finish fourth, and Michael Pilla plugged away all night to finish fifth.

After the checkers Newton planted Snyder coming out of turn two and then once more on the front stretch, winding up on top of Snyder's car. In the ensuing brawl a sheriff's deputy received a leg injury.

Things were calmer in victory lane.

Fultz was gracious after finishing behind James for the second time in as many races. "We don't know these tires," said Fultz, "they are a great Hoosier tire but we were just too loose on them, I turned right the whole race. We were way, way too free. I made every effort not to lose spots, I was overdriving the car more than anything. I've got to thank Phil Harper engines. That little engine is so awesome. Everywhere we've raced with that engine the worst we've finished is second.

" I wasn't going to dump Colt. Last time we raced side by side, but he got good restarts tonight and we raced clean."

"A lot of people think that I race here every week," said James, "But it's only my third time here. There are some tracks you just get a feel for immediately and I guess Concord's like that for me. I was a little concerned when I was around fourth or so but as guys' tires went off I could move up."

"Mine went off too but the car was perfect and it was real good on long runs. I moved up here (from Texas) seven years ago, so to win at Concord Motorsports Park is really special, concluded James."
