Faucette Gets the Job Done Again at Ace

Story by: Corey Latham ~ corey@RACE22.com

Altamahaw, NC(July 13, 2009) -- After not being atop the podium for 3 races in a row, Speedy Faucette had finally had enough. He once again set fast time, and with his ongoing luck in the draw, he drew the #1 spot after qualifying.

His arch nemesis' this year, Robert Turner and Rodney Cook both had poor qualifying runs and rolled off 4th and 7th and it looked as if Faucette would have easy sailing. But even though he ended up with the win, he was not the entire story on this night, as Bobby Griffin would make it known that he wanted a piece of the pie also and he almost got it.

After a week off, and some time to cool down after the last action-packed event, only 12 LMSC's were on hand for the nights 75 laps feature. But as has been the case this year at Ace, the quality of the racing is far and above many of the other tracks with 20 cars and this night would be no different.

Speedy was the fastest car in practice, but Griffin in the Kailey Lynch Ford was right behind him, just a few thousandths off. Griffin would follow up the practice time with a stellar qualifying run, timing in the 3rd spot, behind Faucette and Robert Turner. Ryan Wilson and John Moore rounded out the top five before the redraw.

If you need someone to pick your lottery numbers, Speedy is your man ... as he once again drew the #1 spot for the redraw. John Moore, Dean Fogleman, Turner and Griffin were the new top five. But, they didn't stay like that past turn one.

Green goes in the air and Faucette jumps out front, John Moore gets railroaded on the inside and put back to 7th, Griffin is now beating on Fogleman's back bumper for 2nd and Cook has went from seventh to fourth. And this was all before turn three.

As we get to lap three, Griffin makes the move under Fogleman for 2nd and Turner gets back by Cook for 4th. Back in the pack Jason Payne, Moore, Ryan Wilson and Dustin Rumley are fighting extremely hard, with Rumley finally getting turned around off turn 4 to bring out the first caution of the night. Everyone gets to catch their breath, at least for a few caution laps.

Bobby Griffin is now in second and he wanted to lead badly. Bobby is one of the crowd favorites, he doesn't find himself in the winners circle a lot and he doesn't have the big money that a lot of teams have. But what he does have is a great attitude and a strong racing desire which in turn earns him respect on and off the track. The Kailey Lynch car that Bobby drives doesn't come out every week, but when it does, the Ford power seems to get stronger each week and at this event, it was very strong. Bobby was now in his best position of the year and after a short green flag run, he was on the leaders back bumper.

After another quick caution, business for the lead picked up. Faucette gets away from the field, all but Griffin and as they go into turn 1, Griffin is up under the #37 machine of Faucette. Going into turn 3, Griffin gives Faucette a hard shot, turning him sideways, but Griffin let's off to allow Faucette to gather it back up. All the while, Turner in 3rd is just waiting and as Griffin slows down to get back straight, he makes the move and takes off after Faucette.

Robert Turner has been strong all year and his and Speedy's machines have been very evenly matched. But, he caught him and got beside him with ease, much easier

than it has been at any point in the 2009 season. But passing him was another story and Turner fell back in line to regroup and try again as the caution came out once more. Little did he know it would be his last chance for the lead.

As the cars circled the track under caution, Turner suddenly hit pit road and the hood went up immediately. His quest for victory on this night was over, a burnt plug wire ending his chances. The team would make repairs and he ran like a banshee to end up in the 5th spot.

Now Speedy took advantage. The #70 of Griffin didn't seem as strong as in the early going and Faucette took advantage, distancing himself from the rest of the field. Cook was able to get around Griffin for second on lap 40, but by then Faucette was in another zip code. Behind them John Moore was clawing his way back to the front and for the remainder of the event, Moore, Wilson, Rumley, Fogleman and Jason Payne put on a show for the fans, with Moore finally getting back up to 4th.

Up front it was all Speedy, Cook was 20 cars back and Griffin another 20 back from him. The top 3 were the class of the field and if a caution were to come, Cook or Griffin looked to be the only ones with a shot of passing Speedy. Everyone waited, it seemed at every other event at Ace this season, a caution would come out at just the right time. Well, the right time for the fans in the stands, never the right time for the leader. But on this night it would run caution free the last half of the race and Speedy Faucette was once again atop the mountain.

Great racing once again, Speedy, Cook and Turner always put on a great show. But the highlight on this night was another hard-nosed driver entering the game. Welcome Bobby Griffin, another player on Friday's that will definitely rattle some cages.

UPDATE: After such an impressive run in the race on Friday night, Griffin and his team were thrown out of the finishing order after they refused to tear down their engine. Griffin spoke to us on Saturday at Hickory Motor Speedway and was upset about the tracks decision to tear them down after they finished third stating that it wasn't worth the $600.00 they would receive for the finishing position.
