Falk & DeBolt Split Wins at Langley

Story by: Mason Dunn ~ mason@RACE22.com

Wytheville, VA(September 7, 2009) -- The Late Model Stock Cars returned to action Saturday night at Langley Speedway with a field 19 cars strong ready for twin 75-lap features and things looked very familiar after qualifying as CE Falk took the pole for race number one with Woody Howard to his outside while Paul DeBolt would once again claim the pole for race number two with Falk to his outside.

Falk would continue the dominating display he showed last week during race number one as he would lead from flag to flag en route to claiming his 10th win at Langley and his 11th overall win of the 2009 season. As the race started Falk jumped out in front of his front row companion Howard who seemed content to get to the inside lane in second. Wes Falk emerged from a slight shuffle with the third spot followed by the Edwards brothers Danny and Greg. It wouldn't take long for the first caution to be displayed as contact from John Staton sent the machine of DeBolt for a spin in turn one collecting Dean Shiflett, Doug Warren and Casey Wyatt in the fray. All would be able to continue but only Shiflett would be unable to finish as he would return to the pit area on lap 18.

The field would stay green for the next 29 laps, a stretch in which Danny Edwards made his move to the front bypassing both Wes Falk and Howard to move into second behind points leader CE Falk when the caution flew for the second and final time on lap 32. Back under green the top five of Falk, Edwards, Howard, Mark Wertz and Greg Edwards began to break away from the rest of the field. But as the laps went on Falk continued to open up the margin between himself and Edwards to as much as five-lengths on lap 45 causing Edwards' focus to shift from Falk's rear bumper to the fast approaching front bumper of Mark Wertz.

At the finish, after a 43 lap green flag run, CE Falk would secure the win by just over a second over Danny Edwards, who held off a late race charge from Mark Wertz. Greg Edwards would finish fourth with Woody Howard rounding out the top five for the first of two 75 lap features of the night. But in Victory Lane, Falk's mind was already off the win and on thinking about what he would need to do to pull off another sweep.

"I don't know. I feel like, these twin races, it's not really a win 'til you win both of 'em. We gotta make one adjustment on this car. We were a little too tight, but Danny seemed to be really good. I don't know how much he was riding. And, Paul (DeBolt), he's gonna be good for the next one, said Falk following his win."

Falk couldn't have been more right about DeBolt as in the second feature of the night the pole sitter would match Falk's feat and lead flag-to-flag for 75 green flag laps to win his first of the season. DeBolt got a great jump over Falk on the start and never looked back while Falk seemed to have lost some of the power he showed in the first race. The field stayed pretty much unchanged until lap 60 when Wertz was able to power past Falk for the second spot on the track and was quickly followed by the hard charging Dean Shiflett who passed Falk for third on lap 64. Four laps later Shiflett made a look underneath Wertz for second but was forced back in line by a slower machine occupying the inside lane in the turns. Shiflett wouldn't be deterred though and would grab the position from Wertz on lap 74.

There was a bit of confusion as right after the leaders took the white flag the machine of Jeff Shiflett went for a spin on the backstretch and came to a stop on the track which

caused some to slow up expecting a caution which never came. Luckily, everyone was able to drive around the stopped machine and finish the race safely after 75 green flag laps. DeBolt was the winner by nearly two seconds over Dean Shiflett, with Wertz, CE Falk, and Danny Edwards completing the top five.

When asked about his season to this point DeBolt said, "I tell ya', Randy Sears, he's been behind us. We've been struggling; It's been an uphill battle, but I think we're finally making progress anyway."

The night was an improvement for CE Falk in the NASCAR points standings as with the win in race number one worth 43 points Falk was able to drop his April 11th race at Langley in the national standings, an 11 point improvement, and his July 3rd race at South Boston in the Virginia state standings, a 21 point improvement. Falk now has 751 national and 741 state points as the cutoff for the NASCAR Whelen All American Series is this Sunday, September 13th. Currently sitting second in the Virginia state standings, 49 points ahead of Frank Deiny, Falk will take advantage of his week off while Deiny will make his 18th start of the season in a 150 lap event at Motor Mile Speedway, where he could gain a maximum of 51 points.

In Langley track points Falk was able to pad another four points onto his lead over defending champ Danny Edwards bringing his lead to 26 points with only three 100 lap events left to go on the 2009 schedule. In the battle for third place in the final standings Wertz gained eight points over Greg Edwards bringing the separation to 14 points (672-658). The track will take a week off for the Sprint Cup event in Richmond before the Late Models return to action on September 19th and 26th before another week off for the Bailey's 300 at Martinsville followed by the season finale on October 10th.
