Hudson, NC(July 25, 2009) -- Tri-County Motor Speedway lived up to its slogan "Where the Action is the Attraction" Friday night and I think every fan in attendance will agree.
David Wilson would lay down the fast lap in qualifying with RA Brown rebounding from his tough season to date to qualify second. As everyone knows Tri-County does a dice roll to decide how many cars would invert and after all is said and done David Wilson would start 5th with Richard Childress Racing Development drivers Ryan Gifford and Ty Dillon taking the front row.
When the green flag dropped on the 13 car field it looked as if it was going to be the Gifford and Dillon show as the two raced very hard for the first handful of laps with Gifford edging out his team-mate until lap 14 when Dillon pulls back door to door with the leader. Gifford on the outside, Dillon on the inside as the two RCR cars battle for the lead. Lap 19 would bring out first caution of the night as the 56 machine of Dave Tesson goes for a spin off of turn 4.
Like many other tracks in the region, Tri-County has implemented double file restarts which would set up for even more excitement for the fans that were already on the edge of their seat with the tight battle up front. Coming to the green flag, Gifford would lead Dillon, Wilson, who was on the move from his 5th place starting spot and RA Brown. The flagman waves the green and Dillon jumps out to a huge lead only to have the officials call for a redo as the young driver left the pocket just a little too early.
The next restart provides just as much excitement as David Wilson will dive down into turn one making it three-wide for the lead but only to fall back into third down the back stretch. It looks as if this night is going to continue to belong to Ryan Gifford as he begins to gain a lead on the field with only 25 laps to go. As the halfway point approaches Wilson has powered by Ty Dillon and has his eyes set for the number 29 machine.
Mean while the battles throughout the field were heating up as Jesse LeFevers had been working hard to race his way to the front after his very disappointing qualifying effort with the Ratchet springs coming out of the rear end during his run. Jesse and his team worked hard to rebuild the rear end and hoping to get a good finish. Also Candace Muzny is making her 2nd start this season at Tri-County and has seemed to found the other female racer in the field as Muzny and Megan Reitenour have a fierce battle going on while the leaders battle hard. Tyler Brown has also been on the move with this young talent making his way up to the 5th spot by this point in the race.
As the laps click away the 3 time winner this season at Tri-County looks to have cast his rod and reeled in Gifford. With less then 10 laps to go Wilson looks to be breathing all over the back bumper and just waiting to make his move on the fellow Late Model Stock Rookie. As the action is heating up and the fans are on their feet we have another caution for debris with only 6 laps left in this already exciting race.
A late caution last week bit Wilson and allowed Dexter Canipe Jr to take the win and he looks to capitalize on this one because unlike last week Wilson will be in his prepared line on the outside. Ryan Gifford will lead Wilson, Canipe Jr, and Dillon down to the flag and from the looks of the crowd everyone knows this is going to be one exciting 6 lap shootout to the finish.
Green flag drops and the two leaders go down into turn 1 and coming exciting turn two Gifford looks to break lose and slides up into the 25 car of Wilson, The two slam the wall with Gifford spinning in front of the mangled racecar of Wilson. Gifford would get his car rolling as the David Wilson machine looks to be done for the night. It looks as if Megan Reitenour's night had turned sour with damage from this accident along with Ryan Rust.
As if we hadn't seen enough excitement already we still get treated to a 6 lap shootout redo but this time with Dexter Canipe Jr leading Ty Dillon, Tyler Brown, and R.A Brown with Jesse LeFevers in tow looking to also capitalize on the double file restarts.
Green flag drops and to everyone's surprise Ty Dillon is hanging out on the outside and at times edging his nose in front of Canipe Jr. The fans can't sit down at this moment because with the white flag waving Ty Dillon and Canipe Jr are door to door for the win. Dillon breaks lose and loses a little ground as Dexter Canipe Jr takes home his 6th win of the season with the young Ty Dillon bringing home his career best Late Model Stock finish to date in just over 10 feature starts in this division.
Following Dillon to the line was R.A Brown who backed up his 3rd place run last week with another one during this exciting night, Tyler Brown would also have a great run with a 4th place finish with Jesse LeFevers ending a tough night with 5th.
One thing is for sure if the fans at Tri-County weren't treated to a incredible show during the Firecracker 150 in which before tonight, I personally claimed to be the best race of the year at this 4/10ths mile banked short track ... then they made it even better on Friday night.
This race was exciting in a lot of aspects. From the several two-wide battled for the lead to the two wide battles through out the field this was hands down the best race this year at Tri-County Motor Speedway.. "Where Action is the Attraction."
