Thomasville, NC(June 4, 2009) -- The weekend is upon us, and as far as racing goes, it looks to be one of the busiest of the year. We'll have all the action covered, with exclusive stories from Ace Speedway, UARA at Orange County , and the big ASA Modified/Late-model Stock twin-bill from the famous Franklin County Speedway. Throw in some Whelen Modified testing at Bristol on Monday, and we'll have 4 days worth of racing news and photos.
Ace Speedway starts the weekend off on Friday night, as last weeks events were canceled due to weather. Speedy Faucette had set fast time, beating the field by over a tenth, but after the inversion, Faucette found himself in 5th with Ryan Robertson taking over the P1 position. It didn't matter, as the rains came and put an end to the nights events after the Limited Sportsman had ran the first event.
Faucette will look to keep his pole-sitting ways going, as his 2 closes competitors, Rodney Cook and Robert Turner, look to knock him from the top. Faucette has been the center of controversy the past few weeks, after his altercation with "The Reidsville Rocket", Jason York on pit road. After talking with Jason last week, he stated he wasn't very happy with the way things were handled, but at the same time you could tell he wanted to come back in the near future to "show" them something.
The fields at Ace aren't 30 strong, but there It's quality over quantity. Faucette, Turner, Cook, Ryan Wilson, Brad Kurth, Jason Payne, Dean Fogleman and a host of others could be a threat to win. Ryan Robertson will be back again this week, and looks to challenge for the win after being one of the faster cars in practice and qualifying in the top 5.
Saturday rolls around, and It's time for some UARA racing at one of the best race tracks in the US, the Orange County Speedway. Undoubtedly, the UARA is the best racing for your buck you can find anywhere, and the races of 2009 have proved that over and over. Orange County looks to be the same, as the hottest driver as of late, Brandon McReynolds looks to keep his momentum going after winning last week at Dillon Motor Speedway. Jamey Caudill is the master of the Late-Models, and the point leader should be tough once again, he was the one that McReynolds took the lead from late last week to score the victory.
So many questions are to be answered at Orange County. Can McReynolds keep the momentum going? Can Rodenbeck rebound after the terrible outing at Dillon? Can Wallace Jr. break out of the biggest slump of his young racing career? Will Jamie Yelton show his young protege Brennan Poole the way around OCS, after Yelton's big win there last year? All these will be answered Saturday night, it is shaping up to be another classic.
Moving on to Sunday and it maybe the "sleeper" race of the year, we head to the hills of Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. The ASA Modifieds invade the tight confines of Franklin County Speedway, and as an added bonus, the Late-Models will take to the track for 100 laps in their only appearance there this year.
On the mod side, if you have never seen the Modifieds at Franklin County, you need not miss this. Sub 12 second laps and some of the fastest most intense racing you'll ever see. Brian King looks to defend his win from a year ago, but Burt and Jason Myers, LW Miller, Josh Nichols and Jay Foley look to change those plans.
The big story is going to be the drivers who aren't regulars on the tour, Ronnie Silk and...........TC. Ted Christopher will be venturing down south to run as a team mate to Silk in a car out of the Hill stables. With the addition of the smooth youngster Silk, and arguably the best short-track racer in history in TC, the mod race should be action packed.
On the Late-Model side of the day, it becomes very interesting. Two names at the top of the list wowed the crowd all last year at every event, Jimmy Mullins a Rodney Cook. These two are throwback racers, guys who work on their own cars, drive better sideways than they do straight, and can beat and bang all over the track never wrecking the other. They are the masters of Franklin County going in, but there are some others who will make sure they know they are there.
Darrell Wallace Jr. has had a year to forget on the UARA tour. After scoring his first ever LMSC win at Franklin County last year, then winning a UARA event on way to a top 5 points finish, 09' has been nothing but bad luck and mechanical failures. Wallace Jr. will come straight from Saturday nights UARA event at Orange County, and try to put a "W" on his resume. He will have the hard-nosed Kelly Kingery right there with him, as well as Mike Looney, both having much experience at Franklin County.
Sprinkle in Dustin Storm, Chad Harris, Brad Kurth, Caleb Roark, Buster Carroll and Derrick Lancaster, and we just may have ourselves a barn-burner. And who could forget the one all eyes will be on 12 year-old Michael McGuire making his LMSC debut. Michael has already picked up wins in the LM ranks, but this will be the first in a car with rules that are used everywhere. One would think he is doing it for experience, but people don't understand, he is already past that, he is going to win. The fans will get their money's worth this Sunday, no doubt.
Of course we will have all the happenings from all the other tracks in the region, and twitter updates from tracks as we get them. Whatever you do this weekend, go out and support a local track, you have plenty of options and days to choose from. No excuses this weekend.
