PLACE YOUR Story by: Langley Austin ~ langley@RACE22.com Hudson, NC(June 20, 2009) -- When the night began at Tri-County Motor Speedway all eyes were on Jesse LeFevers, but when the night ended the two guys who had been dominant all along were back in victory lane. LeFevers, who was making his return to Tri-County Motor Speedway for the first time since he destroyed his primary car in a practice crash at Hickory Motor Speedway, found himself picking up right where he left off. LeFevers qualified on the pole for the first of the twin 35-lap races scheduled at the 4/10 mile track and looked as if he might be in a position to pick up his second and third wins of the season, but fate intervened. The top five starters were inverted for both races putting LeFevers to start fifth and that was the beginning of his bad luck as soon after the green flag waved for the first race, LeFevers night was done. LeFevers was sidelined with a broken flywheel and wouldn't return for the second race. The line-up for the first race saw RA Brown, who has had a tough season to date with only one win having come in the first race of the season following LeFevers disqualification, lead the field to the green. Dexter Canipe, Jr., who came into the night tied for the lead for most wins this season with two(tied with David Wilson) started on the outside. Brennan Poole, a rookie who has already won a race this season started third with Candace Muzny making a strong qualifying run in fourth followed by Jesse LeFevers, Megan Reitenour and David Wilson. Chris Lawson, who has been impressive in several starts this season where he had a runner-up finish last Saturday at Hickory to Andy Mercer and a top five finish in the UARA-STARS Series race at Tri-County a few weeks ago, qualified on the outside pole, but was disqualified after his roof was measured a 1/16th of an inch low according to one of his crew members. The green flag flew and Canipe put his Marlowe Racing Chassis in the wind and quickly discarded of RA Brown who ran second ahead of Poole. The first caution of the race waved over the field as Megan Reitenour spun her car in an effort not to wreck a fellow competitor, who she was racing side by side with inside the top five. After the restart, which was the first ever double-file restart which was a new rule instituted at Tri-County this week, Canipe took off again and never looked back. Canipe took home the win, which was his third of the season over Brown, but behind those two was a fierce battle for position between Poole, Wilson and Anthony Anders. Anders won this battle after bumping Poole up the track to take the third position with Poole fourth and Wilson finishing fifth. Lawson had rebounded from his post qualifying disqualification to finish seventh after starting 16th in the 16-car field. After three long races for the tracks support divisions, which were prolonged by cautions resulting from the double-file restarts, the Late Model Stock Cars were ready to get back after it. Canipe by virtue of his fifth place qualifying effort on his second lap in qualifying was set to start on the pole after his earlier win, but he was also looking to make it three wins in one night as he had also won the Limited Late Model race. Poole started to his outside followed by Reitenour, Chuck Jenson, Tyler Brown and RA Brown with LeFevers absent from the starting grid after his team elected not to fix the car to run the second race, but rather to go home and get the car ready to race at Hickory. The race got off to a wild start as Poole and Canipe were door handle to door handle, the fourth place starter, Jenson went spinning wildly in front of the field off of turn two. This set up the first double file restart of the second race and Canipe used this one to pull away from Poole and he looked like he might just set sail from the field once again. Poole began to slip back through the field as an intense battle was shaping up throughout the field as Wilson began to use the high line and Lawson from his 15th place start was tearing through the field using the low line. Reitenour, who had a good run going in the first race until she spun, was again fast and took over second from Poole as he began to slip, but quickly Wilson pounced on her and took the second spot himself. Wilson was reeling Canipe in and Lawson was still picking his way through a very tight pack of cars from third to tenth when the caution flew and gave Wilson the break he needed. With Wilson's car hooked up on the outside and the double file restart putting him out there for the start, it looked like we would have a great battle for the top spot, but when the green flag waved it was Wilson who simply took off. Wilson jumped out into the clean air and set sail, but behind him on the restart in fourth was Lawson and once Lawson made his way back down to the bottom of the track he was coming. Lawson quickly got around Canipe and began to click off some blazing fast laps in an effort to catch Wilson for the top spot with around ten laps to go. However without a yellow flag waving over the field he had his work cut out for him and despite running nearly a half second faster a lap than Wilson he couldn't catch him. Wilson went on to take home the win, which was an emotional one for the Lee Faulk Racing team, who had lost a member of not only their team, but their family, Roy Faulk. The healing process had began as tears of joy flowed from the entire team and Wilson himself was quick to point out that this win would be dedicated to Roy. Wilson and his team took a few minutes and hugged each other, it was a special moment for them and even though it was their third win of the season it seemed so much bigger than the other two wins. Lee Faulk, the team owner, his son Michael, Wilson and the entire team took the time to really savor this victory. Behind Wilson, Lawson was happy with his run after having to start in the rear of the field, and he was followed to the finish by Canipe, Reitenour, Anders, Poole, Tyler Brown, RA Brown, Jenson and Tyler Church. For Wilson the win, his third of the season kept him tied with Canipe for the most wins this season and keeps him within striking distance to win the championship with Canipe coming in only 24-points ahead of the youngster. There were many who were certain that LeFevers return to Tri-County would show that if he had stayed to run for the championship, he would have won, but instead the two guys who have dominant in his absence continued to show their faces in victory lane. Canipe and Wilson will no doubt battle all the way to the end of the season for the championship and it should be a good fight as neither driver wants to give an inch.
