PLACE YOUR Story by: Langley Austin ~ langley@RACE22.com Dillon, SC(May 31, 2009) -- If you like the young guys, then Dillon Motor Speedway was the place for you on Saturday night as the UARA-STARS Late Model Stock Car Series rolled into town. Friday practice, most of the first practice on Saturday and then the final practice on Saturday was paced by "The Real Deal", Brennan Poole of the Woodlands, Texas driving the FatHead Racing Chevrolet. Poole was only beat in the first practice on Saturday by another youngster, second year UARA-STARS Series driver, Brandon McReynolds. Poole and McReynolds would turn out to be the biggest stories of the night as both drivers wowed the great crowd on hand for the UARA 150. Poole went out to qualify second of the 21 cars to take time and put down a scorching fast lap of 16.168, the fastest lap of the day and looked to be headed for his first career pole award, but youth met experience. As last weeks winner at Tri-County, Jamey Caudill went out in the Black's Tire Service Chevrolet with just a handful of cars left to qualify and busted off a 16.138, three-hundreths faster than Poole. McReynolds was the final car to go out to qualify and placed himself in a great position qualifying third. With Caudill on the pole looking to become the first repeat winner of 2009 and Poole lining up on the outside for his first top ten qualifying effort of the season, the fans were sure to be treated to an exciting race. However on the start of the race things started off a little controversial as Poole grabbed the lead off the start due to what many thought was Caudill spinning the tires on the start, UARA officials decided to black flag Poole. Poole quickly fell back to second then third in an attempt to give the position back as he and all the drivers were told they could do in the drivers meeting, but he was still black flagged and quickly made his way down pit road. He never lost a lap going down pit road and came out just ahead of the same drivers he was ahead of before the black flag. Showing that he had the fastest car he pulled away from now leader, Caudill and McReynolds who was riding in second. The first caution came out on lap 28 as rookie, Matthew Godley got into the back of Concord Speedway winner, Paddy Rodenbeck as the two raced outside the top fifteen. It was all but the end of the day for Rodenbeck as Scott Turlington and Paul Bryant piled into his spun car in turn four. Rodenbeck, who came in as the points leader ended his day with a 20th place finish, his worst finish of the season and certainly his worst performance overall as he qualified 18th and wasn't moving toward the front of the field. Rodenbeck's bad luck at Dillon was a carry over from his late race crash at Tri-County Motor Speedway, where he led until late in the race and was spun into the wall. Rodenbeck's hottest pursuers at Tri-County was McReynolds and Caudill and soon after going green from this incident that's how they would be running up front as McReynolds dove under Caudill and ripped the lead away. Many thought that Caudill was just riding saving his stuff like he did at Tri-County one week ago, but as the laps rolled on it looked as though he had nothing for McReynolds. With the caution for Rodenbeck's crash, Poole, who was at the tail end of the lead lap after his black flag found himself back up with the cars he was racing for position at the back of the field. The young driver wasn't ready to ride at the back of the pack and quickly started to show the guys in front of him his strength. Back up inside the top ten it looked as if Garrett Campbell, who was coming off his first top five finish at Tri-County last week was on the move as he looked underneath, Coleman Pressley for a top position inside the top ten. Pressley had started to drop back after Jr Motorsports driver, Owen Kelly pounded at his back bumper and eventually made the move by him. Kelly, was coming off his worst run of the season at Tri-County, where he looked more like a pin ball out there all over the track, but this week he had one of the best cars at the track and was letting the guys running in front of him know about it. Pressley continued to drop back as Andy Loden made his presence know getting up inside the top ten from a 15th place start after failing pre-qualifying inspection. Poole was again making his presence known as he continued discarding of the cars lap after lap until his run back to the front was interrupted by a caution brought out by Clint Mills. Mills had qualified a strong 8th, but found himself going backwards soon after the green flag had waved and now found himself heading down pit road for adjustments. Kyle Grissom, who has had a terrible 2009 season thus far after crashing on lap 98 with a blown tire at Bristol destroying a brand new race car, then totalling another brand new car at Concord Speedway just one day after expiring an engine at the same track. Grissom's bad luck lingered on with him to Tri-County last week as he was a victim of an over anxious young driver, but this week he looked to be back on his game and at least in the ball park with the faster cars. Grissom then fell out of the top ten when Poole made his way inside the top ten and continued his march forward passing 9th place John King a few laps later. Poole then set his sights on Loden for eighth and was aided in his pursuit by another caution as Joey Bryant looped his car around on the back straightaway. Bryant, was driving a borrowed car as his team continues to work hard to get his new car ready for competition and soon after spinning the car he decided to park it to keep from damaging it further. Continuing his run through the field was Poole, who basically owned this night as he kept fans watching his black and yellow car instead of eyeing a quiet battle up front. Poole moved by Loden then Campbell for sixth and just a few laps later found himself making the move by an early mover, Owen Kelly and put his car back in fifth. It was a storybook come back for the young driver and with over 30-laps still left to be run, it wasn't over. For the third time of the night the UARA-STARS officials were forced to red flag the race in an effort to keep from running too many laps under caution as they have in recent weeks when King hit the wall hard in turn one after coming to pit road with damage just a few laps earlier. King's night was done as his car was destroyed. Before the yellow flag waved for King's incident McReynolds was attempting to lap Chad Mullis, who was having a terrible run in a Gary Hargett owned car. Mullis fought McReynolds hard and managed to stay on the lead lap when the caution waved for King's crash. The green flag would fly once again with just over 20-laps left in the race and up front it was still McReynolds who was pacing Caudill, Matt McCall and Richard Boswell, who both had unusually calm runs. However it was just the calm before the storm as quickly Boswell went to work on McCall for the third position and took it away leaving the door open for Poole to make his move under McCall for fourth, but that's where Poole's awesome rally back to the front ended. Poole was just about to complete the pass on McCall when his car began skipping and cut off with a broken distributor gear thus ending his top five run. After Poole made his way down pit road to park his machine things began to heat up inside the top five and just outside as Campbell made his move underneath Loden for sixth. When he made his move Pressley, who had slipped back earlier made it three wide in turn four for the position nearly turning Campbell, but all three made it through with Campbell sixth, Loden seventh and Pressley eighth. Pressley continued to battle hard with Loden for seventh, but was unable to get past the veteran driver as things started to shake up a little in front of them a few laps later. Kelly was hounding on McCall's bumper for fourth as McCall looked to be encountering some problems as his car sounded like it was not running at full power as it cruised down the straightaway. Kelly made his way past McCall and into fourth and Campbell followed him right through the hole and took fifth drop kicking McCall to sixth with just a few laps to go. Back up front Caudill and Boswell started to put some pressure on the back bumper of McReynolds and as the white flag went in the air from UARA flagman, Danny Willard McReynolds felt the pressure and pushed hard off turn four hitting the wall and nearly climbed up the wall. Luckily for McReynolds him hitting the wall seemed to make Caudill back out just enough for him to complete the final lap without challenge. McReynolds took home the win in his Marlowe Racing Chassis, his first of 2009 and a complete turn around after having lost several engines this season in practices and races. McReynolds made the switch to a Kowalsky engine before the race at Tri-County last week where he finished third after battling with Caudill and Rodenbeck for the lead late and it looks like the change has worked out for the better and landed him in victory lane. This was also the first win for McReynolds since joining forces with last years championship winning crew chief, Nick Hutchins. It was Hutchins fourth win as a crew chief and McReynolds second career UARA-STARS Series win after claiming his first at Franklin County Speedway last August. Behind McReynolds at the finish line was Caudill, Boswell, Kelly and Campbell. For Campbell it was his second straight top five finish after collecting his career first last week at Tri-County. For McReynolds it was the culmination of everything they had worked so hard for this winter after releasing his 2008 crew chief and replacing him with Hutchins, building a brand new Marlowe race car and then recently switching engine builders ... the long journey for McReynolds finally ended with the "Franchize" back in victory lane. McReynolds had expected to contend for the championship and after problems for the points leaders the last two weeks and two great runs for him, he might just find himself back in the thick of things yet.
