Fedrizzi, Sanders and Truell Win "Midweek Mayhem"
Story By: Corey Latham Concord, NC ~ Another Wednesday night at Concord Motorsport Park, and another night of off the wall action. It is called "Mid-week Mayhem" for a reason, it's always exciting. The Carolina Ford Focus Midgets ran a 40 lap feature and the "stadium-stocks" ran 15 lap twins. And to all the fans there, the low $7 gate fee was worth every penny. After two go-cart support races, the midgets took to the track. At the green Mike Ward goes to the lead off the start, but just 4 laps in, Rick Fedrizzi goes under Ward and into the lead. It would be the only pass for the lead, but behind Fedrizzi, Michael Mohelski from Fredrick MD., and point

leader Bradley Reithmeyer from College Station Texas put on a show of their own. After disposing of Ward, Mohelski drove his #12 machine as hard as it would go to fend off the charging Reithmeyer, hitting the wall a few times off the corner and smoking the right rear each and every lap. In the end Fedrizzi cruised to the victory with Mohelske holding off Reithmeyer and Ward, and rookie Jake Dallenbach rounding out the top 5.
As we go into stadium-stock race #1, it was shaping up to be a barnburner, with 21 cars taking the green flag, the biggest field to date. At the start, the beating and banging started almost immediately. 2-wide, 3-wide, they might have Rick Fedrizzi(center) is interviewed following his win in the USAC Midget race by Official USAC Announcer, Westley Outland.
went 4-wide, it was hard to tell. Ronnie Barron was leading, but got snookered on a restart by Tony Black as Black put his "truck" into the lead on a early restart. This division has a cone placed on the track before every restart, if you want to pull out and take the high line you can, it makes it some of the most exciting racing you'll ever see. And later in the race Steven Truell uses the cone to his advantage and moves past Black to take the victory followed by the winner of the 3 previuos events, A.J. Sanders. Black had a 3rd place run going until he spun off turn four with 4 laps to go, hitting the safety vehicle sitting in the infield. The USAC officials were wide awake after that spin.
Steven Truell(center) is surrounded by his crew after taking the checkered flag in the first of twin Mini Stock races last Wednesday evening.
In the second race of the evening it was more of the same. The top 10 were inverted from the first race, meaning even more craziness. Matt Hill and Jason Keaton were up front for this one, and before we get to lap 3, Steven Truell, Glen Hamilton and Andrew Sanders are 3-wide off turn 4, and somehow make it through. As the race wears on, A.J. Sanders gets to the front and stays there, taking his 4th win in 5 races. Kevin Yates, making his first start in 2 years comes home second, but the story was behind those 2. With 3 laps to go, Glen Hamilton spins Truell off turn 2 and receives the black flag....... to the end of the line. Neither driver was very happy about the situation and let their opinions be heard.
Some more great racing on a Wednesday night, AJ Sanders(left) stands with son and crew chief, Steven Sanders after another dominating win in the "Midweek Mayhem" at Concord Motorsport Park. Sanders is a multi-time winner of the Wednesday night races.
and the whole show is over before 9:30, you can't beat that with a stick. Join me again on Tuesday September 2nd and we'll do it again. The midgets always have full fields, and the season at Bowman Gray Stadium is over, so there should be even more Mini Stocks there for the next show. It would be hard to top past Wednesdays, but I'm sure it will be done.
