Boswell a BridesMaid No More

Welcome to RACE22.com ... The Home of Late Model Stock Car Racing ... RACE22.com

Story By: Corey Latham
Hudson, NC ~ Welcome to one of the most beautiful places on earth, Lonesome Pine Raceway in Coeburn VA.

This little track is nestled high up in the Appalachian mountains and is one of the nicest facilities you could visit. The area is supported by the coal industry, and on Saturday night, Richard Boswell II turned his season of coal into a diamond as he was able to pick up a win on stop #13 of the UARA season. It was only a matter of time.

Ohh no, It's The "Camry"

Richard Boswell was all smiles in victory lane after finally breaking through in winning the UARA 150 at Lonesome Pine.

Last stop at Tri-County Motor Speedway, Matt McCall was unbeatable. He set fast time in practice and led the entire event in dominating fashion in a brand new car, Toyota Camry decals an all. Well, the Pistone LTO machine rolled into lonesome Pine this week and it was business as usual again. McCall was fast in practice and set a new track record to pick up the Sunoco Pole Award. Somewhat surprised himself, Kyle Grissom would start outside, followed by Boswell, Darrell Wallace Jr., and local favorite Wade Day.

Help From Everywhere

During the qualifying session, Luke Laney got hard into the outside wall off the corner and

pretty much tore up the whole right front suspension. Since there weren't over 28 cars attempting to qualify, Laney would be allowed to start in the back......if he could get it fixed. The crew thrashed, but time was running out until some help came. Car builder and short-track legend Greg Marlowe saw the team struggling, and in the blink of an eye, he was hard at work with some help from Jamie Yelton......and it wasn't even one of his cars. Needless to say, it was fixed up right and Laney was able to take the green.

To The Rear

After qualifying, the team of Roger Lee Newton was told that their spoiler was over to the right too far. No problem, they would fix it. In all the conversation between the Newton team and UARA officials, a few words were exchanged and the #33 ride was told to start in the back. Roger Lee was not happy about he situation at all, and being the quiet person he is, he let it be known. "How much does a ticket to this race cost?, asked Newton. I told him I thought it was $15.00, to which he responded ... "It's gonna be worth $150 tonight, because I'm coming through the field like a ball of fire, it's gonna be a show". Newton took off at the green on a mission, but his night would go from bad to worse as he was ultimately sidelined by a broken right front sway bar on lap 74.

"I'm Leaving"

As the green waved, with McCall up front we were looking for total domination again. Kyle Grissom had other plans though, as he took the lead on the high side off turn turn on the opening lap and was gone....really gone. Grissom wasn't extremely happy with his car in practice, but thought when the temperatures cooled down in the night air he would be OK. and OK he was as he led the first 122 laps.

Domination Over

Roger Lee Newton was obviously dejected after being sent to the rear for an altercation with UARA Officials just before the on track autograph session.  Newton's crew got verbal with officials after being told that they had to move the spoiler on their car because it was too far to the right.  In the end it didn't matter as the team struggled all race.

As Grissom was pulling away, McCall began to have his hands full with Boswell. Knowing what the car was capable of, McCall comes to the attention of his pit crew on a lap 76 caution after losing second to "Boz". The hood goes up and McCall comes back out, only to park 6 laps later. McCall didn't seem too disappointed

though. "This thing was so good tonight. I knew something was wrong from the drop of the green, and it turned out to be something in the ignition I think, it never ran right at all. I'll be at Martinsville Wednesday for the test, and the Pig Rig car is just as good or better than this one," said McCall.  Not good news for the competition.

Scrappy

Alex Yontz is in the championship battle, and was looking to gain points on leader Jake Crum at Lonesome Pine. As it got near race time, the Yontz team were scratching their heads. 17th first practice, 18th in the second, and qualified 17th. What? The crew changed the entire car 3

Alex Yontz(55) and Jamey Caudill(50) put on a great show at Lonesome Pine Raceway as the two spent most of the race battling side by side or bumper to bumper for a top ten position.

different times on Saturday, and I mean everything. The crew knew it would race good, and as much as Alex was hatin life that day, he looked up when asked about the race and said "Passing points". He knew it too. As the race started Yontz found himself inside the top 11 by lap 30. Alex ended up being a highlight of the race as he and Jamey Caudill raced very hard for nearly the entire event. In the end Yontz would take home 7th, gaining 10 spots and finishing inside the top ten in a car he was hating. That isn't a bad day at the office.

Turning It On

Jamie Yelton(8) was a man on a mission in the UARA 150 at Lonesome Pine Raceway after cutting down a tire around the mid-point of the race.

Point Leader Jake Crum had been in a slump of sorts lately, and a 4th place finish at Tri-County 2 weeks ago had the team turning the corner once again. Lonesome Pine looked to be another great run for Jake, as he was up in practice and qualified inside the top ten. From the drop of the green, the #1 machine was marching to the front. As the race wore on, Crum was undoubtedly one of the fastest cars on the track as he took 2nd from Grissom with 10 laps to go, but just ran out of time to try the leader. Another one on a mission was Jamie Yelton. Yelton had been running in the top 6 when a flat right rear sends him to the pits for new rubber on a lap 82 caution. On the same lap as Yelton takes rubber

Matt McCall's(23) night ended after his "Toyota Camry" encountered ignition troubles and sidelined them while racing in third position.

off, Jamey Caudill pits and adds a rubber to the left rear spring to stiffen the car up, and it worked greatly. They both started at the rear of the field and Yelton came trough the field like a wild man, passing cars at will all the way up to 3rd on Crum's rear bumper. Caudill was a little more quiet, but still effective as he took his once ill-handling car back up to finish 6th.

Finally....

Richard Boswell II had been so close so many times. During the drivers meeting he was asked if something different could be wrote about him this week other than the usual. "I'm sick of reading the same thing all the time, sick to death

Scott Turlington(48) races to the outside of Caleb Roark(7) late in the 150-lap UARA event.  For Roark it was his first UARA start and the young kid finished 20th finish despite his inexperience.

of it" said a determined Boz. He stayed calm and cool as he had done all year and finally got up to make his move on lap 119. Instead of going to the preferred inside, Boz makes his move on the high side of Grissom and they run side-by-side for 4 laps with neither giving an inch. Boz comes off turn 4 and takes the lead only to have Kyle Moon spin right in front of them coming down the frontstrech. Luckily the leader are able to avoid and everybody gets another shot at Boswell. But they couldn't do it. Boswell was this leading with just a handful of laps this time, he was not going to be denied. Crum and Yelton get by Grissom with 10 to go and try to get to Boz, but he had it. When...when....the time was now, Boswell was a winner on the UARA tour. Not only that but he has gotten to be the hottest LMSC driver in the Southeast as the year has progressed. You boys at Martinsville had better watch out.

Wade Day(34) races with Darrell Wallace, Jr.(76) during the UARA-STARS 150 at Lonesome Pine Raceway.  Day had a great night running a Hess Race Car that he built for Craig Stallard to run Limited Late Models at motor Mile Speedway.  Day after the fifth place finish will now get the car ready to head to Martinsville Speedway for the Bailey's 300, the biggest Late Model race of all.
