Rockingham, NC(April 13, 2010) -- You weren't supposed to be able to do it some people said. A Late Model Stock Car should never see a twenty-four degree banked one mile track others said, but last year the UARA-STARS Series rolled into Rockingham Speedway and put on one the best shows the once prominent NASCAR track had ever seen.
This past Saturday the UARA rolled back into the garage at the Rockingham Speedway a test session before there May 15th double header with the USARacing Pro Cup Series.
In total there where thirteen UARA-STARS cars, six USAR Pro Cup cars and two ASA Challenge series cars in attendance. Some of the names in the garage included former UARA driver Paddy Rodenbeck, Lee Tissot, Kyle Grissom, Brennan Poole and Scott Turlington.
There were several rookies in attendance that would get help from veteran NASCAR driver Steve Grissom. Grissom helped the rookies by giving them rides around the 1.017 mile in a street car showing them which lines would work best. Those included Clint King, Ronnie Bassett Jr., Dylan Presnell, Julia Dawson and Matt Kurzejewski.
Rodenbeck quickly jumped to the top of the board in the first practice session with a fast lap of 25.413 seconds which is roughly 144 MPH. Kyle Grissom stopped the clock second fastest with a time of 25.466 seconds. Rookie Clint King was off to a quick start as he was fourth fastest in the first session with a time of 26.112 seconds.
After a 2 hour break for USAR Pro Cup's first session and a lunch break it was time for the second of three sessions to begin. Rodenbeck again set fast time with a 25.146 second time. Grissom again was second but now almost 4 full tenths off of Rodenbeck and he would have to find speed if he was going to hang with Rodenbeck. Brennan Poole was again third fastest with a 25.617 second time, showing that the sophmore driver was solid in testing on the one-mile speedplant.
In the third and final session, Rodenbeck had already loaded up his car feeling he had learned all he could. With Rodenbeck on the trailer, Kyle Grissom closed the gap between he and Rodenbeck with a time of 25.265 seconds. Brennan Poole was now second with a 25.612 second lap time. Lee Tissot found some speed in the final session and laid down a lap of 25.824 seconds.
Julia Dawson impressed a lot of people with the courtesy she showed when faster cars approached her, as she worked mostly on getting familiar with the one-mile track in preparation for the May 15th race, her first on the Rockingham, NC track.
The UARA-STARS returns to action this Friday night at the Tri-County Motor Speedway. The next race for Rockingham Speedway will be the UARA-Stars/USAR Pro Cup doubleheader on Saturday May 15th.
