Smith, Evans Take LMSC Wins at Myrtle Beach

Story by: Chris Owens ~ chrisowens@RACE22.com

Myrtle Beach, SC(April 3, 2010) -- It was that time Saturday night, time to head back to the track in Myrtle Beach, SC to see who would be able to knock off last years Late Model Stock Car track champion Brent Brinson. Brinson was so confident last week in testing that he loaded up his #1 Western Auto Chevrolet early and headed to the house. Among the cars in attendance Saturday night where Justin Milliken, Terry Evans, Michael Elliott (Novembers, Riderswholesale.com 100 Limited Late Model race) just to name a few.

The format for the night would be Twin 35 lap races. The first race was set on times from qualifications where Stuart Ricks would set fast time with a 20.72 second lap time. The rest of the top 5 would be, Rick Smith, Sam Yarbrough, Matt Cox, and Terry Evans.

In the first race, Stuart Ricks and Rick Smith would battle each other for the first position. Smith would eventually take the spot; Matt Cox would get a terrible start and fall back to the rear of the field. Newcomer Jeremy Frankoski in the Chad McCumbee Racing Chevrolet would bring out the only caution in the first race when he spun in turn 1 tagging the left rear quarter panel. On the restart, Smith and Ricks would battle until final Smith would take the top spot. Smith would cruise to take the first checkered flag of the night.

"These are a great bunch of guys and if it weren't for Tommy Byrd we wouldn't be here" said Smith as he exited the car in victory lane. The top five would be Smith, Justin Milliken, 2008 Track Champion Sam Yarbrough, Terry Evans and Stuart Ricks who barely edged 2009 Track Champion Brent Brinson for 5th.

Myrtle Beach Speedway inverted the top 6 based on finishing position from the first race. This would put Brinson on the pole alongside Stuart Ricks. On the start, Terry Evans would get a good jump and go three wide into turn 1 with the front row. Evans would win the race down the backstretch and set sail over the field. Stuart Ricks would get into Rick Smith on lap 2 exiting turn 4 throwing up a huge smoke screen. Edward Jordan would spin as he tried to avoid the stopped car of Smith. Evans would claim his first LMSC victory in just his second season.

"We knew it was coming, we just didn't know when" said Evans after winning the race in convincing fashion.

In the 25 lap Limited Late Model race, Dal Wright was moved to the back of the pack for jumping the initial start. This moved Sammie Scarpelli Jr and Dustin Turnage up to the front row and Turnage would win the battle off turn 2 and take the lead. Eventual race winner Dal Wright quickly made his way through the pack and quickly got by Scarpelli Jr. for 3rd. But this was all Dustin Turnage's race as he led wire to wire taking his first ever feature win. In post race inspection, Turnage and Hunter Bledsoe where both dq'ed for being too light at the scales. This gave Wright the victory with Sammie Scarpelli III second and Lucas Williams third.

The always exciting Super Truck division was also in action Saturday night for a 50 lap dash. Last year's track champion Jamie Weatherford continued his dominance in qualifying as he claimed the pole. Kenny Lawrence would start alongside and beat Weatherford to the first turn and down the backstretch. Jamie would move back by Lawrence a few laps later. Jimmy Herrington would bring out the nights only caution as he stopped in the middle of turn 1 & 2 after his truck shut off. Herrington would get it refired and continue on. Weatherford now had a challenge from Bryan Blackwell on the lap 23 restart but would quickly move past him and pull away taking his the checkered flag.

"I wanna congratulate Brian Blackwell, Brian had a good run and our thoughts and prayers are with his dad Fred, I told 'em when the race started if there was anybody to be me tonight that would be the one I wanted to do it." said Weatherford after his dominating win.

Myrtle Beach Speedway will be back in action this Saturday night April 10th. The Late Model Stock Cars will be running a 100 lap feature event along with the Mini-Stocks, Street Stocks, Limited Late Models and there new division Bombers/Young Guns.
