Matt Leicht Scores First Win at TCMS in 2010

Hudson, NC(May 2, 2010) -- After making the trip to Southside Speedway in Midlothian, VA for one of the best Late Model Stock Car shows ever on Thursday, the trip to Tri-County Motor Speedway for a weekly Friday night race wasn't going to measure up no matter what.

However, when seven cars lined up for a 50-lap Late Model Stock Car race it was more than disappointing, but at Tri-County Motor Speedway, a multi-groove, worn out surface, even just two cars can put on a show. Among the seven cars in attendance was two-time winner already this season, Grant Wimbish, last race winner, Kevin Leicht, his brother Matt, multi-time winner last season, Jesse James LeFevers, former Greenville Pickens Speedway champion, David Roberts as well as Tyler Brown and Sean Brierly.

Wimbish qualified on the pole with Matt Leicht on the outside and his brother, Kevin starting third, Brown fourth, LeFevers fifth, Roberts sixth and Brierly seventh. From the drop of the green flag it was M. Leicht who would assert himself as the car to beat with Wimbish and K. Leicht third. With M. Leicht out front taking care of business, his brother, who won last week was trying to get himself in a position to race with his younger brother, but Brown was able to get ahead of he and Wimbish as the three had a great battle.

The three battled hard through the opening laps of the race until finally K. Leicht was able to try and make a move under Brown and was clipped by Wimbish, sending him spinning in turn one. K. Leicht's car was then overheating despite not hitting anything and he was done for the night. That left his brother M. Leicht out front with Brown and Wimbish riding second and third for the next restart. LeFevers, who has been dominate on the 4/10 mile track in past seasons was having a bad night with his car shutting off and simply not handling well when it was running.

The next caution would wave due to LeFevers as his car shuts off and Brierly ends up hitting him hard from behind, it would ruin an already less than stellar night for both drivers. After K. Leicht was out of the race the only real battles would be between Wimbish and Brown for second and Roberts and LeFevers for fourth with Wimbish eventually taking second and Roberts eventually passing Brown for third position at the finish. Brown was fourth with Brierly fifth, LeFevers coming home sixth and K. Leicht finishing seventh.

This night belonged to Matt Leicht though as the young driver picked up his first victory of the season on the 4/10 mile track and put himself back in the thick of the points battle in the tracks premier division. Hopefully the announcement of cutting the purse due to a lack of cars on Friday night won't hurt the track going forward, but we all know that's certainly not the answer to the problem. Tri-County is a great race track and hopefully they'll be able to get things back together for the rest of this season as we hate to see any track fail.

In the Limited Late Model division there was a great field of cars, 17 strong with Tyler Church and Waylon Flynn leading them to the green flag. Flynn asserted himself early as the car to beat as Church fell into the clutches of Monty Cox with racing side by side throughout the field for all 35-laps. Flynn would take the victory over Cox, Church, Scott Franklin, Jason Cochran, Christian Pahud, John Hilliker, Jeff Melton, Terrance Tucker and Nick Waycaster.

In the Late Model Truck division Jason Crouse took home his first victory of the 2010 season after starting from the the pole and leading every lap. Jake Marlowe, son of Late Model Stock Car racing legend and chassis builder, Greg Marlowe qualified second, but didn't make it to the finish of the race after being involved in an accident. Thomas Beame, Dominick Casola, Ernie Harris and Jody Church rounded out the top five of a nine truck field.
