Glenski Survives 16 Cautions to Win Inaugural SE Limited Series Race
Story by: Chris Owens ~ chris@RACE22.com After starting from the third position, Glenski rode early as leaders Gary Ledbetter and Scott Hall burned there tires up. Glenski made his move on pole sitter Ledbetter on lap twenty eight when he and Hall made contact in turn two with Hall taking the top spot as Glenski followed. Following a lap twenty-nine caution for Cory Joyce, Glenski took the lead from Hall and never looked back. The races first caution flew on lap seven when Joyce and Waylon Flynn made contact in turn four sending Flynn around. This was only the start of the day's problems for Joyce. The second caution flew just nine laps later on lap sixteen when Joyce, Ben Stanton and Brad Eddy all went around exiting turn four. Joyce couldn't get his car fired so the series through the first red flag of the day to get his car going again as they didn't want the other competitors burning too much fuel. Jimmy Herrington brought out the third caution when he went flying off the track in the middle of turns three and four. Herrington was able to continue on without damage to his car. Cory Joyce brought out the fourth and fifth cautions when he went around on the backstretch and in turn four and by this time you would think the series would have parked Joyce for bringing out more than three cautions, but they allowed him to continue to bring out cautions and chose not park him.
Under the fifth caution for Joyce several other competitors including John Whaley, Jimmy Rice, Brad Eddy and Jason Cochran tangled while racing back to the caution flag. Cochran was the only car to continue of those involved as the rest were done for the day. Rice's car was completely demolished as the whole left side and front end of the car was ripped off after one of the other cars went flying over top of his car. This was the second red flag of the day as it took extensive clean up to get Rice's car and parts off the track. Pole sitter Gary Ledbetter would spin on lap thirty-three and stack up the whole field behind him. Everybody was able to avoid the stopped car and he continued on without damage. Hunter Bledsoe, Waylon Flynn, Cory Joyce, Paul Wark and Archie Adams Jr. were all involved in a lap forty-seven caution in turn four, but were all able to continue on without much damage other than cosmetic. At the halfway point of the event, Glenski remained in charge over the field, but Ledbetter was charging through the field after contact with Hall had bumped him from the lead and later a spin in turn four would send him to the rear of the field. After being involved in the wreck under the caution earlier, Cochran brought out the caution on lap fifty-eight, but continued on without any more damage to his car. Ledbetter's charge to the front ended as he retaliated on Hall, spinning him for the early contact that had taken him out of the lead as he was sent to the rear of the field and it looked like the two had settled their problems. Also involved was Matt Merrell and JJ June and the top five after the accident was a little different with Glenski still leading Christian Pahud, local favorite Averitt Lucas, Kenny Bost and Bowman Gray Stadium Stock regular, AJ Sanders. Sanders was making his first start in a Robertson Motorsports entry and was having a solid run despite having a distributor issue on Saturday during qualifying derail a potential top five qualifying effort. After starting outside the top ten, Lucas, who had won the three previous Late Model races held at Florence Motor Speedway, finally made his way into the top five and was now going after Pahud for the second position. As Lucas went to the inside of Pahud, Paul Wark brought out the caution for his solo spin in turn four. At this point there were seventeen cars left on track and on the restart, Lucas and Pahud had an amazing battle for second. Pahud didn't want to give up the spot but Lucas wanted it really bad as again Joyce would bring out the caution on lap sixty-eight. Pahud held the spot over Lucas but relinquished it on the restart with Stanton and Ledbetter now joining the fight for third as Pahud began his fall from the top five. Bost brought out the caution on lap seventy three when he went around by himself in turn three and four as the top five was now Glenski, Lucas, Stanton, Pahud and Ledbetter with twenty-seven laps to go. Just one lap later, Paul Wark pounded the inside wall on the frontstretch and after the caution flew, Joyce and Matt Merrell went around in turn two. It seemed as if Joyce wasn't all too happy with Merrell and he showed it under the caution as Joyce was now trying to turn Merrell under the caution. After all was calm the green flag waved again, but it didn't take long until the yellow was back in the air as Archie Adams Jr. spun sending June off the track on the backstretch. Both cars continued without any more damage to their machines. Now the field decided that they didn't want to keep pace speed which brought out another red flag to tell the top two of Glenski and Lucas how to pace. As the field got the one to go from the flagstand Cory Joyce pulled on pit road complaining of leg pains and appearing dehydrated. After getting the ambulance across the track we finally went back to green and Glenski spun his tires on the restart, but after a brief challenge was able to hold of Lucas. The battle for third was a good one between Pahud, Stanton and Chris Chapman. Stanton took the third spot dropping Pahud to fourth to fight it out with Chapman. At this point there were only twelve cars left on track.
A decent green flag run took us down to the five to go mark when Pahud and Ledbetter made contact sending Ledbetter off the track. The red flag was displayed yet again, but once back under the green Glenski cleared Lucas on the restart but would have to do it one more time when Kenny Bost brought out the final caution of the day with three laps to go. Glenski and Lucas battled on the restart down the backstretch and into turn three, neither gaining an advantage until turn one when Glenski cleared Lucas. Glenski then went on to take the checkered flag for his biggest career win and the young man was excited about his performance. The Southeast Limited Late Model Series takes a three month break before the next race to avoid interfering with drivers racing for points at their local tracks, but will be back in action at Ace Speedway on September 24th and 25th. Will that race be filled with cautions? What drivers from the first race will return for the second event? I guess we will find out in a few months times as the birth and maturing of the SouthEast Limited Late Model Series continues.
