TJ Barron Wins his 4th in a Row at Coastal Plains
Story by: Chris Romano/Contributor to RACE22.com Barron led early from pole with Howard right on his bumper. The two quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the field, as Brandon Hobbs and Jerry Burns fought for third. As the leaders continued to pull away the race to watch was for third as John Whaley came up through the pack after another disappointing qualifying result to challenge Hobbs and Burns. By lap ten Whaley took third place comfortably and began to close the gap to the leaders. On lap twenty a relentless Howard got by Barron and it looked like the Wilmington, NC driver's race winning streak was about to end. Barron wasn't letting his streak go without a fight, and on lap thirty-three he retook the lead, only to have the race's only caution come out as he made the pass, putting Howard back in front for the restart. John Whaley's charge to the front came to an end as he whitewalled his right rear. A bolt that fell out of the track bar put Whaley's car in the wall. Howard held on for the restart but with thirteen laps to go Barron got back into the lead. Jerry Burns assumed third place and the running order stayed that way until the last lap. While Barron and Howard took the checkers there was a mad scramble coming out of turn four for third, with Brandon Hobbs winning the spot, and Brandon Clements just edging burns for fourth by a bumper. Hobbs knew the last lap was going to be a Hail Mary run. "We were fighting a loose condition toward the end," said Hobbs, "but all in all it was a good car tonight." In second Howard said he didn't need the race's only caution period. "The yellow probably hurt us a little bit," said Howard. "We didn't need to cool our tires down. We were in a situation where we thought the car would stick and we would be in good shape. We had T.J.'s(Barron) car good and hot at that point, but it don't always play out in our favor, so we'll take it and come back next week and do a little homework."
In victory lane Barron acknowledged that this one wasn't easy. "I had to work pretty hard for this one. Taylor(Howard) had a good car. We were pretty evenly matched there. I don't know what happened to him at the end but I like racing like that. It was good and clean." Welcome to RACE22.com ... The Home of Late Model Stock Car Racing ...
