Hampton, VA(June 3, 2010) -- 2Going into Saturday nights 100 lap feature race for the Crossroads Fuel Late Model Stock division at Langley Speedway there had been four different winners in the first five races of the season with the only repeat winner being defending division champion C.E. Falk. That would change yet again as points leader Greg Edwards would notch his first win of 2010 becoming the fifth different winner of the season.
After qualifying had concluded for the Late Model Stocks, Edwards found himself on the pole for the feature event with a time of 16.079 beating out brother Danny Edwards by 0.048 seconds. John Staton, C.E. Falk and Woody Howard would round out the top five after qualifying.
At the drop of the green flag Greg Edwards worked to quickly gain the advantage over his brother Danny and would clear him coming off turn 2. Danny Edwards settled into second with Falk moving into third past John Staton. After some shuffling in the middle of the top ten in the opening laps the field got primarily single file and began to put laps on the board.
The first caution flag of the night flew when contact from leader Greg Edwards sent the lapped machine of Casey Wyatt for a spin in the middle of turns 3 and 4 collecting second place C.E. Falk in the process and relegating him to the rear of the field. The second caution flag wasn't far behind as Falk and Staton made contact entering turn 2 sending Staton for a spin and causing heavy damage to the rear of his machine after contact with the wall. Falk would then make a visit to pit road hoping to cure an overheating issue caused by the contact.
Back under green Greg Edwards continued to lead as Danny Edwards found himself heavily distracted by the third place car of Woody Howard. Howard would take control of the second spot on lap 64 and get a reprieve from Edwards two laps later as the final caution of the race came out for a wreck between the cars of Rick Gdovic and Terry Carroll.
On the final restart Howard would make a charge on the outside looking to take the lead from Edwards and would on lap 68 for the first time on the night. The two would continue to run side-by-side until lap 71 when Edwards regained his advantage over Howard. Meanwhile, Falk was on the comeback trail from his misfortune returning to the top five on lap 78 after passing Brandon Gdovic and then taking fourth away from Dean Shiflett on lap 84. As the laps winded down Falk chased the cars of Danny Edwards and Woody Howard but time simply ran out.
Greg Edwards cruised on to his first win of the season by just about a second over Woody Howard. Danny Edwards, C.E. Falk and Dean Shiflett rounded out the top five with Brandon Gdovic, Casey Wyatt, Mark Wertz, Dude Gibbs and Wes Falk completing the top ten after 100 laps. The entire top ten finished on the lead lap.
"We've rebuilt this car three times before it ever got to the race track. The car probably didn't have 30 laps on it before tonight and it was a big guess as to how we unloaded it off the trailer," said Edwards in victory lane. Edwards had brought both his regular red number 21 and his secondary black number 21 to the track that day and decided at the last minute before qualifying to race the black car for the first time this season. "It was the best thing I've had in a long time."
Greg Edwards used the win to extend his points lead to 10 points over brother Danny Edwards while C.E. Falk remains third 14 points back of the leader. The win for Edwards continued his streak of finishing in the top three in all six races so far this season. The Crossroads Fuel Late Models are back in action this coming Saturday for twin 75 lap races.
