Kernersville, NC ~ Alex Yontz had planned to be in Daytona, Florida this weekend running the ARCA ReMax race at Daytona International Speedway, but his plans have changed after a late December decision by Richard Childress Racing to pull the plug on Yontz' ARCA plans.
Yontz plans for the ARCA ReMax Series originally had him planned to be in the 12 Speedway races with Yontz challenging for the "Speedway Championship" in the series. A change in the plans at Richard Childress Racing took Yontz out of these twelve races, but Yontz still kept his hopes alive with sponsorship hopes. Those sponsorship hopes allowed Yontz family owned team to borrow a car to go to the Daytona test in the final days of December where he fast 4th fastest on the first day of testing and 20th fastest on the second day.
Yontz hopes were finally dashed when his sponsorship deal fell apart and while Yontz is in Daytona right now and will likely be roaming the ARCA garage this weekend, he won't be racing. In a conversation with Yontz this morning he was really disappointed that the ARCA deal didn't work out, but was ready to focus on his Late Model Stock Car program and three Camping World East Series races that he'll run later in the season.
"I was really looking forward to running at Daytona, but the deal with RCR fell apart and there's nothing you can do about that, so we're just going to run our Late Model a lot," said Yontz.
Yontz said that he wouldn't return to the UARA-STARS Late Model Stock Car series full-time, but that doesn't mean you won't see him in select events.
"I'm certainly going to run the two Bristol races, we had a lot of success there last year and I think we can contend for a win again this year. We're going to have four race cars ready to go this year and I think we're as prepared as we've ever been."
Yontz Late Model Stock Car plans include trips to some of the track he's had success on like Orange County, Ace and Franklin County Speedway among others. He'll also try to make a handful of starts at Motor Mile Speedway and will also travel around to some of the other tracks in the region this year. Yontz has proved himself at a lot of tracks in the past including winning races at Bristol Motor Speedway and Martinsville Speedway and he's the only guy to win a Late Model Stock Car race at both of those prestigous tracks.
Yontz almost sold a couple of his Late Model Stock Cars to do the ARCA Speedway program and that's something he's certainly glad he didn't do, but along with his Late Models he's going to run some Camping World East Series races this season. Yontz has plans for three of the NASCAR East races at Iowa, New Hampshire and Dover. Those three races may not be all the NASCAR East Series races he'll run if sponsorship can be found for the family owned operation.
Yontz will also mentor young, Alex Kennedy from Aztec, New Mexico, who is only 15 year-old in select races this season if a deal can be reached between the two. Kennedy currently is slated to make his first start of 2008 at Concord Motorsport Park in Concord, NC the site of his first and only UARA-STARS Late Model start last year where he won his heat race making the field and then running a smooth race and finishing 22nd at one of the toughest tracks on the UARA tour. Kennedy may also make a handful of starts in other UARA or Late Model Stock Car event in one of Yontz' Pontiac's.
No matter what Yontz races this season he'll be in good equipment and as his track record has proven he'll be one of the front runners and when the checkered flag falls he just be the first one to cross the finish line.
