Because so many of you out there in short track land think that road racing is a third world form of motorsports, you haven't been to the SCCA double regional . Yes, there are stock cars in road racing , and a good number of them are former short track late model stocks. Take for instance Stephen Dunn's stars and stripes Monte Carlo.  The Zervakis chassis started life as a bullring brawler at Franklin County Speedway in the mid 90's and progressed through a series of owners to its present state. The current crew chief was even the crew chief on the car in its original form at Franklin County Speedway!

This weekend, the Al Fairrer SCCA double regional returns to Virginia International Raceway and at last check, there were a couple of dozen

bonified stockers that will go off the line as part of the group 7 race. The 14-lap affair will include SCCA GT-1 cars (specially prepared Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, etc.) that will vie for the overall win. The stock cars will be battling for points and prizes as part of the GTA National Tour, the Stock Car Road Racing Championship Series, the Pan-Am Tour, and the V8 Stock Car Racing Series, along with fighting for SCCA regional markers

If you are a novice to road racing, the cars are divided into SCCA classes and in the case of the group 7 race, the nearly five dozen entries are comprised of everything from a Datsun 240Z to a Dodge Viper. The stock car classes are GTA (Grand Touring American) and the more expensive

SPO ( Special Production over 2.5 litres), It can seem a little confusing trying to sort out who's running for what points and the like. All of the previously mentioned series have websites that will make it easier to distinguish who's running for what. Bottom line is that you will see some great racing.

Even though the racing will be on Saturday and Sunday, the best day to go will be Saturday as that will be the only contest involving the Stock Car Championship Series. I've even suggested to some of my buddies from west of Danville to check out the Saturday race on their way to Saturday night's card at South Boston. Noting better than attending two tracks in one day. There will be seven races in all on the 3.27 mile layout with obviously the "taxicabs" going last.

At one time, I showed the same distain for road racing that some of you harbor. After my initial visit to VIR, I was hooked and I think each of you naysayers should give it a shot. If you're not careful, you might actually enjoy yourselves.
