WE ARE ...
Story and Photos By: Corey Latham/RACE22.com In qualifying, Jason York put the #18 machine on the Silver Eagle Distributors/Bud pole for the 200 lap event. After a redraw of the top 5, Motor Mile Speedway regular Davin Scites would start P1. At the green Scites jumps to the early lead on to lose it to Caraway hotshoe Brad Brinkley a lap later. Behind them Andy Loden, Rodney Cook and Jason York freight train outside pole sitter R.A. Brown and push him back in the field. The night would only get worse for Brown, at lap 24 he parks the car
and calls it a night. On lap 45, York had finally made up his deficit from the draw and was on the rear of then leader Davin Scites. As they entered turn 1, York slides up the hill and makes contact with Scites forcing them up the hill and pulling the 2 side-by-side for the next 2 laps until York finally makes the pass. We get to lap 59 and one of the scariest crashes you could ever see unfolded. #80 Chris Bowen was running in the top ten when he got loose off of 4 and when he corrected he dislocated his shoulder. The sudden pain put the car into the outside wall at the exit of 4, and before any warning could be made, #85 of Brent Raymer barreled into the back of Bowen completely destroying the rear of the car and puncturing the fuel cell. A giant fireball went into the air 50 feet, and the cars of Ryan Wilson and Justin Johnson had no where to go and went into the accident area head first, ultimately destroying both of their machines. The red flag was displayed and clean-up began. Luckily all drivers were ok, Bowen got out with one arm in no time flat. After the race he was obviously dejected. "This was a brand new car. I don't know if anything at all is usable on it after that. If we can get it in the trailer I'm gonna leave it there for at least 3 days, I don't want to see it" After the red flag it was more of the B.J. Mackey show. Lap 64, B.J. by Mack Little for 7th. Lap 65, B.J. by Cook for 6th. Lap 67, B.J. by Owen Kelly for 5th. Lap 70, B.J. by Brad Brinkley for 4th. Lap 75, B.J. by Andy Loden for 3rd. You get the idea, this thing was rollin to the front. At Halfway the drivers were given a break to work on their cars and make adjustments. Frank Deiny Jr., while not really slow, was not the barn burning car we were all used to seeing. At the break his team made some major adjustments, changing the rear gear, and that would be crucial for the rest of the race. Halfway (lap 100) 1.York 2.Scites 3.Mackey 4.Loden 5.Brinkley 6.Owen Kelly 7.Randy Benson 8.Deiny 9.Cook 10.Mack Little 16 cars on lead lap, 21 still on-track After the restart things continued right where they left off. On lap 108, York gets ambushed by Scites and Scites moves to the lead. 2 laps later Mackey gets beside york and coming off 4 York looses the handle and nearly wrecks, but saves it before the rest of the field gets to him. Just due to the York "slide", a caution was thrown and the field stacked up to head it. In the melee, Mack little who had been running in the top 10 all evening with his crate motor, got pushed from behind and planted into the outside wall ending his night. About lap 122 was when a car started dropping and a few were coming. Jason York who had one of the strongest cars all night, gets pushed to the outside and Andy Loden, Owen Kelly, Randy Benson and Frank Deiny came on by. The cars of Benson and Deiny looked to be getting stronger as the night went on. Davin Scites seemed to have the field covered at this point. Even with the charging that Mackey was doing to get up to second throughout the race, at this point the #06 of Scites seemed to be leaving him, nearly pulling ahead 30 car-lengths. Everything was great until lap 145. As the cars went down the backstretch, the Scites machine suddenly lost power. That was it, it was done. When asked after the race what happened, Scites replied "It blew up". He may not of won but they will surely remember he was there. As the field ran 56 laps caution free with Mackey now just pulling away, the speedway staff decide to throw a caution for....well....absolutely nothing, just to make it a little closer. Mackey's lead he had worked so hard to get was now erased and field was set up behind him. It didn't matter. As we get down to the end, Mackey is riding and Benson, Deiny and York are coming. 25 laps from the end the defending Caraway champion Benson gets under Loden for second while York gets by Deiny for 4th right behind them. Loden looses the handle and falls back just a little from here to the end and said his car was "wayyyy tight".
A caution for a spin and a restart with only 3 laps remaining gave Benson a little hope. But a great restart by Mackey would seal the deal and he would take the victory in the second annual Rusty Harpe Memorial. A great race, a great crowd, and to the memory of a great man. Thanks to Chip Harpe and everybody involved, can't wait until next year. |
