WE ARE ...
LATE MODEL STOCK CARS!
Langley Austin(LA): Ok, Here We Go ... First the UARA-STARS are set to celebrate their 100th race, hat's big for a Late Model Stock Car Series most people said wouldn't make it.
Corey Latham(CL): I had no doubt, it's an idea that should have been thought of long ago. Others will soon follow for sure with the exposure it's gotten.
LA: no doubt about that ... it was and is a great idea, but I think there are at least two other series on the way to being started for Late Model Stock Cars,
Another new section(one we hope is a hit with the readers) is OFF the WALL with Langley and Corey where the two racing guru's chat about some of the going's on in the regional Late Model Stock Car racing scene and this week we're talking the UARA-STARS and their 100th race at Dillon Motor Speedway!
but can more than one survive???
CL: It's hard to say, the UARA has the "base" planted so to say. But then again, it might come down to money talks and BS walks.
LA: of course it will ... of course it's been rumored and I stress RUMORED that the PASS South Super Late Models may be accompanied by a Late Model Stock Car tour next year ... and hey 125-laps Super Late Models and 125-laps Late Model Stocks on one night for $15.00 ticket ... can that be beat?
CL: Sure it can if you promote it right. Just thinking about it, if they do come with this series and somehow they could work somewhat with the UARA, the local tracks will still have cars and we will have more Late-Models than you could shake a stick at.
LA: no doubt ... but back to the UARA-STARS's 100th race .... Can you believe we will actually have three drivers who competed in the 1st race competing in the 100th race ... Alex Yontz(who competed in his first ever Late Model race in the 1st race), BJ Mackey and Jamie Yelton.
CL: Wow. That's some time there and I think Alex is still about 19 LOL. And all of them have done other things over the years and here they are, and they are the ones to beat once again. It's amazing looking at the UARA stats over the years, 48 winners over 99 races? Is that stout or what?
LA: Yeah that's stout, but you know the wins list includes some big names(i.e. Denny Hamlin, Steven Wallace, Brandon Ward, Frank Deiny Jr., among others) and it has some, somewhat no names(i.e. Tim Weaver, Tommy Cherry among others) ... it's a very diverse list of winners
CL: And now the "new breed" is coming along. Darrell Wallace, Jake Crum, Roger Lee, I'm looking for a young gun to win this week at Dillon. I'm just wondering if the emotion from Orange County is going to carry over to Dillon. I know Bristol was last race, but I don't think anybody wanted to risk anything there.
LA: they were way too fast at Bristol for stupidity, but Dillon a little short track could produce some of the same intense action we saw at Orange County, but I don't know about Alex Yontz and Clay Greenfield, I think their deal is over until something else sparks the fire. But you are right the "new breed" is coming and with Darrell Wallace, Jr. picking up his first Late Model win at Franklin County last weekend and coming off a fourth place finish at Bristol ... He could be a fierce competitor in the race his family is sponsoring this weekend at Dillon.
CL: And I picked him in our Race22.com picks and didn't even take him as my rookie pick, I just picked him to win the whole dagum thing. Like I said on the "Kick'n Asphalt" radio show the other night, I was 14 and acted like a fool, but on the track he is anything from childish. He looks like a 20 year vet. I just hope Ross Furr can get his game back on track really, it's hard seeing how the defending champ is doing this year. And none of it has really been his doing. I look for Darrell and Ross to be battling for the win. These things are harder to bet on than any race I go to.
LA: I tell you what if you go by the numbers from past seasons and just inside knowledge in the UARA Fantasy picks you would think you could do pretty good, but man you and I know more about this series than anyone and we are not only trailing "pick my favorites", Doc Love, but also my fiance', Kim and her little sixteen year old sister ... I'm not sure Darrell Wallace, Jr. will be happy to hear both of us picked him this week?
CL: Doc Love can kiss me where the sun don't shine, his luck is gonna run out soon. I'm still looking for the Asheboro, NC crew of Garrett Campbell to come through. There are so many dagum rookies that are good, it's hard to pick one. Back to an earlier thought, do ya think that Clay Greenfield and Alex Yontz went out to dinner like they did in days of thunder?
LA: you know Corey, I don't think we should talk about the fight(oops, didn't mean to say that) at Orange County ... It might help to get a few butts in the seats at these races and you know we can't have that ....... no, really, you know I think that Alex and Clay's deal will happen again, it may be in a UARA race or it might happen one week when they see each other at a NASCAR race ... can you say Martinsville???
CL: I doubt neither would be in the heat race, but it would be exciting if they were running 5th and 6th with 2 to go. I am just happy to be going to Dillon. Most tracks have always got some flack going on at the message boards, but I have never heard anything but good stuff about the thing Ron Barfield is doing there. Guaranteed, if those two are going for some top 5 spots at the wire, we'll have something to talk about. I just wonder about the other rivalries, say the 33 and the 1, I know it's coming eventually. Not that I want to see that, but damn it makes for some good racing.
LA: yeah, that's a rivalry that could easily break loose, but right now Jake Crum has been superior to Roger Lee Newton, but Newton is coming into his stretch of the season now and will be strong in the upcoming handful of races .... honestly I think that one side of that deal is over and past it, but the other side still hasn't let go, but that's all I'll say
CL: I really can't wait. I'm going to get to go to the beach and go see racing. It should be a barn burner for sure with everything going on within the series. I'm picking Darrell Wallace to win and that's the gospel. Who or What do you think we should look for going into Dillon for real?
LA: I think we'll see BJ Mackey up on his mount and driving off into the night with the checkered flag and the check ... he owned this place in the 150-lap race we saw last year, this track is a little similar to Motor Mile and we all know the outcome there, but I think Jamie Yelton and Jake Crum will also be tough to beat.
CL: Do ya think we can get Doc Love to do the chicken dance in front of everybody, that would really make my night.
LA: no and I hate we didn't get video of that at the Concord test session ... that was scary, just plain SCARY
CL: SCARY, but real funny. I'm just tickled to be going to Dillon, should be some good racing. And after a night in Myrtle Beach you know I'll be in rare form, I might even find a car to qualify.
LA: Corey Latham driving a race car? NOW THAT'S REALLY SCARY ... But, hey if I could find a car that had a big enough window to fit my fat butt through I would too and hey it looks like we're going to have a slightly short field this week ... we could both make it, LOL!
That will do it for this week, we've gave people plenty enough to chew on for now, but next week we'll talk about track car counts and the effect one track is having on another, plus how about' Coleman Pressley??? That and more next week.
