Martinsville, VA ~ While everyone was busy watching now two-time NASCAR National Champion, Philip Morris testing on Wednesday at Martinsville Speedway there were several other top name Late Model Stock Car drivers and some unknowns posting fast times around the 1/2 mile track.

Alex Yontz of Walnut Cove, NC, who won the Baileys 300 back in 2006 posted the fastest time according to stopwatches being manned by RACE22.com reporters Langley Austin and Corey Latham late Wednesday evening as much of the more than 100 cars began making "sticker" runs(new tires, mock qualifying) just after 2:30pm. Yontz turned in an unofficial track record time of 20.212 seconds around the half mile speedplant, besting Morris' best time of 20.281, which was turned in a few minutes before Yontz'.

Yontz and Morris are easily two of the favorites going into the event with both being past winners of the race and both being veterans of Late Model Stock Car racing, but those two guys aren't alone with fast times being turned in on Wednesday. Another veteran driver, Brandon Butler turned in some impressive times dipping down to a 20.398 late in practice with off and on NASCAR

Alex Yontz(above) turned in the fastest lap on Wednesday at Martinsville Speedway, but flew under the radar as 2008 NASCAR National Champion, Philip Morris had the infield buzzing with his laps.

Craftsman Truck Series driver, Timothy Peters getting close turning in a few laps in the 20.50 second area.

One of the biggest surprises of the day belonged to young Lucas Ransone of Madison, NC who turned in some times of 20.453 and 20.467 in consecutive laps around the track on his mock qualifying run. Another surprise was a lack of speed from last years race winner, Dennis Setzer, who turned laps consistently around 20.756 to 20.875 throughout much of the day.

With all eyes on who the fastest guys were in practice there was several teams there working on making their cars good for the long runs and turning in some great laps on longer runs including; Tommy Lemons, Jr., Jamie Yelton and Matt DiBenedetto among others. These three guys would go out on used tires and consistently each be with in the 20.65 to 20.85 second bracket, which will be key for keeping pace during the race. Andy Loden and Kelly Kingery both turned in some consistent laps in the same bracket as Lemons, Yelton and DiBenedetto and will both no doubt be strong contenders when race time rolls around if they knock down that fast lap for qualifying and get in the show.

There were certainly plenty of drivers in the next category being in the 20.90 to 21.20 second bracket as much of the 100 cars in attendance were in this "bubble" area as we call it. UARA-STARS points leader, Richard Boswell and second in points Jake Crum who was there in a Tamco Motorsports entry were both in this category. Another driver mired back in this area on the time sheets all day it seemed was eight time 2008 race winner, Coleman Pressley, son of former NASCAR Nationwide Series driver, Robert Pressley. Pressley seem to struggle all day with the handling of the car, but with that teams track record this season I expect them to make huge gains as we head into the festivities next weekend.

With well over 100 cars in attendance on Wednesday for the Test Session they will be expecting another big field of NASCAR Late Model Stock Cars for the Bailey's 300 next weekend and RACE22.com will certainly be there to cover the whole thing starting next Thursday as the Haulers roll in to begin parking straight through from tech inspection, practice, qualifying, heat races and the 200-lap main event and even post race tech, which can sometimes be just as interesting at Martinsville with the thorough job done by the NASCAR officials. So check back all week for pre-race coverage and don't go anywhere else for your race day coverage!
