11:00am ~ Live here at Martinsville! Looks to be roughly 120 cars at the track, 104 haulers on pit road, some teams have brought 2 cars. Matt DiBenedetto is here in the car formerly drove by Paddy Rodenbeck on the UARA tour, with a motor from Deac McCaskill (John West racing engines).
Travis Jarrett is here in the Pistone LTO house car, first race of the year not in a Swaim Motorsports car. Curtis Truex Jr. who was released a few weeks ago from Jr. Motorsports, is here in a Sam Beatty owned entry.
Garrett Campbell who won his first ever LMSC race at Caraway last week is turning some fast laps on tires that have over 150 laps on them. Bobby Griffin is testing today in the Kailey Lynch car that he has been running at Ace Speedway the last few weeks.

12:41pm ~ Update on the "Forest City Bad Boys", Jamie Yelton has just ran a 20.60 on old tires, and his new teamate for Martinsville, Matt DiBenedetto has ran a 20.67 in his first time ever in the car also on old tires.
Mack Little, who was setting some very decent times here in the morning session, is now a spectator for the day as he has blown his engine and will not be making an apperance in the Bailey's 300. Mack has been running the crate engine primarily this year, and this was only his second outing in the bulit motor. He deosn't know exactly what it is yet, but he knows it's bad.
Jonathan Cash is driving the Chad Watkins owned car, the car has not been run in some time. Cash is fighting a tight condition, as is most of the field. The crews will make adjustments and go for that all important qualifying run later in the day.

12:52pm ~ Ryan Robertson is making another appearance here at Martinsville, and the day is going a little rough. They had to shim the starter, and the power steering is coming and going, resulting in the team only getting 7 laps on the track. But in those 7 laps Ryan feels comfortable and the times are in the 21.2 - 21.4 range. Once again, another tight racecar.
Clay Greenfield is extremely happy with his ride, running some quick laps around the 20.80 bracket. They are now preparing for the afternoon session and a mock qualifying run.
Jake Crum is in a Tam Topham owned car, and is getting the feel of it rather quickly, running a fast lap on last years tires at 21.2.
All eyes are on the 2008 National Champion Philip Morris, and the Clearances Steakhouse ride is not disappointing. All times today are on the stopwatch, some watches are faster than others, but a roundabout time on the Morris ride is at 20.40 ... By far the quickest time heard today.

~ Stephen grimes is happy with his car, the "Grimey One" has ran on old tires all day. Simply because he has no sticker tires, they will not be making a mock qualifying run. But on old tires he was consistently at 21 seconds, with the fastest being a 20.91. another driver tight up off the corner.
2008 Myrtle Beach Speedway champion Sam Yarbrough isn't quite satisfied with his car, he can't get through the center of the corner like he wants. He has already made a mock qualifying run at 20.73. When I told Sam about Philip Morris's run of 20.4's on old tires, he didn't believe that for a second. "If he ran that then he'll get the pole at a 19.86 or something".
After clocking many cars for some time now, the low times heard earlier seem a bit inflated. Most of the field including Morris, Yontz and Ramsey are right around 21.1 to 21.25. Many sources have the Brad Brinkley car as the fastest now at a 20.500.
More Lap Times by Corey Latham:

~ Matt McCall goes up in smoke on front straightaway, Power Steering pump went out on McCall's car and blew out all over the under side of the car ... Clay Greenfield spun in the fluid on the track as the track sits idle for clean-up.
3:59pm
~ Turns out the Power Steering Pump wasn't the issue it was a broken oil line ... McCall's confidence is high and he is loading up rather than fixing the issue and going back to testing with only a little over an hour left of practice for today.
4:31pm
~ COREY:Matt McCall has went up in a cloud of smoke, with a trail of oil leading to his garage stall. Luckily for the "Pig Rig" team, the culprit is only a broken oil line. The team is loading up, happy with their performance of the day. There is a sense of confidence is in that garage stall. Prior to the problem McCall made a sticker run and was unbelieveably slower than his run with slightly used tires at a 20.70, compared to the used tire run before it at 20.62. Traffic has been noticeably heavy today, more than years past, making a clean lap almost impossible.
Jamie Yelton made his sticker run, and even passing a car high coming out of turn 4 ran a 20.52. The Yelton bunch is extremely happy with the car, and have been all day.
Ryan Rhodes has loaded up after making his sticker run. Rhodes put new tires on and only ran slightly faster than he did in practice at a 20.90, seems that the idea that everyone had about the new tires blistering the track is not happening the way we all thought.
As I am writing this, Langley has just came in and gave me an update, and it seems the times are now getting very low. Philip Morris just busted off a lap of 20.29, and Brandon Butler ran 2 consecutive laps at 20.49 and 20.62. The Morris Lap is faster than the track record set last year by Davin Scites.
Ryan Robertson 20.72
Sam Yarborough 21.21

4:35pm
~ Sticker Tire Runs are commencing as we speak and with that came the lap that Corey wrote about from Philip Morris of a 20.28, a new track record if it was official. Alex Yontz, the 2006 winner of this event also blistered the track moments ago with a 20.36 followed up by a 20.46 second lap. Brandon butler also turned a 20.49 with Lucas Ransone turning a 20.45 while defending winner, Dennis Setzer also turned in some impressive laps at 20.67 seconds. We'll have more as the day charges on to a finish.
5:29pm
COREY: Well, test day here at Martinsville has come to a close. The day was incident free until the last 30 minutes. Kenny Fields spun into the turn 1 wall causing considerable front and rear damage, and just minutes later Dustin Rumley backed into the wall damaging the rear end of the #17 machine.
The end of the day brought out the fast times like we knew they would, with Philip Morris running a 20.29 and Alex Yontz turning a 20.21 by my watch. There were drivers that were fast at any given time, but consistency is something that is key. Jamie Yelton, Matt Dibenedetto, Philip Morris, Alex Yontz, Brandon Butler, Deac McCaskill, Garett Campbell, Rodney Cook, Matt McCall, Brad Brinkley and all three of the Jr. Motorsports cars (Boswell, McFarland, Kelly) were consistent all day. Most years there is a wide range on the times, but all cars seemed to be very close this year. Two weeks from now should be the most competitive LMSC race that Martinsville has ever seen for sure.
Thanks to Mike Smith, Clay Campbell. the hot dog lady, and all the staff here at Martinsville for making all of us feel at home. More coming later this evening on Race22.com......stay tuned.
