Rookie of the Year Award Winner is ...

Wytheville, VA ~ Sixteen year-old, Matt Guido DiBenedetto is the first winner of the Rookie of the Year award for the "22's", awards for Late Model Stock Car racing.

DiBenedetto won the award with 1153 votes of the 1556 votes that were cast on the other rookie drivers on the ballot in the RACE22.com Online Poll that only stayed up for a few days.  His stiffest competition came from Southern National Raceway rookie, Corey Strickland, who won four races at the 4/10 mile track and nearly won the chase for the championship winning three of the final seven races.  Strickland received 228 votes finishing second in the RACE22.com Online Poll over the other drivers on the ballot including; Chrissy Wallace, who won four races at Hickory Motor Speedway, Nathan Wheat, who won his first career Limited and Late Model Stock Car race at Franklin County Speedway and Austin Dillon, grandson of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team owner, Richard Childress and run top ten in selected UARA-STARS Series races this season.

DiBenedetto overshadowed the rest of the rookies with two UARA-STARS Series race wins and a fourth place finish in the Bailey's 300 at Martinsville Speedway, Late Model Stock Car racing's biggest race every year.  At just sixteen years of age, DiBenedetto's accomplishments were incredible, actually being that age or not, his accomplishments were awesome and something that a lot of veteran drivers would give their right arm for.

"Matt(DiBenedetto) has the best attitude of any driver I've ever been around, he shows a maturity way beyond my years not to mention his and he's one very talented young driver and RACE22.com is proud to crown him the first ever Rookie of the Year award winner," said RACE22.com webmaster, Langley Austin.

Currently DiBenedetto is without a ride for the 2008 season and for this award winning driver it would be a shame not to see him have a ride in something even if he returns to Late Model Stock Car racing.
