Wytheville, VA ~ This award was the first of twenty staff voted awards and for me announcing this one is bitter sweet.
Don Hutcherson of Rocky Mount, VA was the announcer at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway, VAfor many years back in the 1980's and early 1990's as well as announcing at Natural Bridge Speedway in Natural Bridge, VA, Oak Level Raceway in Oak Level, VA and Victory Stadium Speedway in Roanoke, VA through the years. Hutcherson was the guy who I remember hearing announce races the most when I was growing up and when he returned to Franklin County Speedway as the announcer this season, it was special for him and for many of the Franklin County Speedway fans.
Very early in the 2007 season in June, Hutcherson was sidelined when he was involved in a highway traffic accident that nearly cost him his life. Hutcherson survived the accident and began his road to recovery, but abruptly lost his life on Monday, December 3, 2007.
Hutcherson has been selected as the 2007 Announcer of the Year award winner over fellow announcers, Doc Love of Rural Hall, NC, who announced this season at Friendship Motor Speedway and former UARA-STARS Series announcer, Alan Dietz of Mooresville, NC. Hutcherson won the award by a landslide in the staff vote by RACE22.com & Star City Racing News and will forever have his name etched in as the first winner of the RACE22.com Announcer of the Year award.
"Don(Hutcherson) was an interesting character, I can remember him interviewing me when I won my first bicycle race when I was a kid and and he was one of the funniest announcers I've ever listened to. Don will certainly be missed by all the fans of Franklin County Speedway and he'll be missed by everyone here at RACE22.com," said RACE22.com webmaster, Langley Austin.
RACE22.com wants to keep Don Hutcherson fresh in the minds of all the fans every year and we've decided to honor him by renaming this award for 2008 and in the future to the Don Hutcherson Memorial Announcer of the Year Award.
"He had one of the most recognizable voices in announcing and we knew we had to honor, Don Hutcherson with renaming this award to celebrate his life and his announcing career," commented Austin.
